Little bump on a DE day...
The pic attached shows the wheel of a 997 of a bud of mine. It happened on a DE track day at 40 mph near the pit lane. According to him, some suspension damage as one can imagine. Of course it wasn't driving at 40 that caused this, it just happened once he slowed and the inertia decreased.
The wheels that he has on his car were not original but they were sitting on P-zero until 2 weeks ago. He replaced the tires with Hankooks and I wonder if those non N-spec tires might have added additional vibration to the wheels and the end result was that...

I'd suspect the wheels before the tires. Even if non-N tires were used, that shouldn't have caused catastrophic wheel failure. Did he by chance hit something hard at high speed?
Otherwise there would be a lot of track day junkies in real trouble running on Hoosiers, Kumhos and Toyos.
I personally never liked those wheels, now even less...
Weirdly enough, his car is a CPO that came with those wheels. Makes one think about how serious the stealerships are about certification. I thought that the wheels would need to be OEM, but I guess not.
He took his car to DE t least another 7 times on P-zeros without an issue and at the first time on Hankooks that happened, I couldn't ignore the coincidence

I have always said, although the OEM wheels are heavy they are tough. The tires and wheels are in direct contact with the road and should be good quality.
honestly looks like a replica wheel. I'm very sorry that happened to your friend. Others in the forum could learn from this so it doesn't happen to them. There was a recent thread about replica wheels and how they are the same construction, etc. He's fortunate it didn't happen at speed, his car is ok with the exception of some suspension damage (great oppurtunity to switch to coils and get proper wheels), and forum members can learn from this.
I want to stress I feel for him as he didn't even know what the wheel was being that it was a cpo.
I hope this doesn't hinder him from going back to the track or him loosing faith in his car.

I think this case shows how serious proper wheels and tires are. I don't wish that to anyone and hopefully people will learn from facts instead of personal opinions.
His wheels were not oem or oem replicas, they were flat black,3 piece multi spoke wheels. I thought for a car to be certified, the wheels should be oem; but apparently not.

Do you have a photo of the wheel before it broke, or one of the others. It would be good to post so others can see what wheels are a possible risk.
I think that if he bought the car from a dealer with those wheels, then he has a complaint with the dealer. Wheels should not fail like this. If he bought it from a third party, then the dealer will argue that the wheels were swapped after the car was inspected.

I'll ask him for a pre disaster photo...
I would put in a warranty claim for the wheel and all the suspension damage. The wheel failed while under warranty, let the dealer find the fault in the owner.
