GT3 seat install - airbag light & harness bar

I'm installing the GT3 seat from a 996 (Recaro type). Do I need the service centre to disable the airbag light?
Also, would anyone know if a harness bar from 996TT (with bose) would fit a 997S (with bose).

Yes you will need a Porsche dealer or a Porsche service shop that has a PWIS tool to go in and turn off the side air bags so you do not throw fault codes.

+1 you will need the PIWIS to shut off the side airbags, it takes only a few minutes.

I have the 996 roll bar in my car, here is a link to thread I started when they were first installed.

+1, been there, done that. Specifically, your Porsche dealer/servicer must use their diagnostic computer to program the following options:
· Driver Thorax Airbag : No
· Passenger Thorax Airbag : No
· AWS : No (Automatic weight sensor for passenger seat)
After these changes:
· No more error codes for missing air bags
· Remaining passenger side air bags will always be armed (Passenger Air Bag Disarmed light will flash 3 times when car is started then go out)

One other minor point - when using track harness with these seats instead of the street seat belt, the seat belt warning lights and chimes will not turn off. I originally used rear seat belt plugged into drivers side front buckle to defeat this - worked fine, but if you forget to connect it, you can't reach the rear belt after you are buckled into your harness. I broke down and bought a cheapo seat belt extender, cut the buckle off and keep that in the center console to use at the track to defeat the seat belt warning when using the 6-point harness. The passenger side isn't an issue - since you had AWS changed to 'No" the computer doesn't check for passenger belt connection.

Hope this is of some help. Good luck!

I just run my drivers seat belt around the back of the seat and hook it up when I am on the track. As for the passengers side airbag, I bought a airbag deactivation kit and can turn it off manually!

Thanks all for the response. Your information has helped a lot & now I know what to ask for when I put the car in to get reprogrammed on the PIWIS.

If you care you might want to check with your insurance company about shutting off the air bag. Mine (Stat Farm) told me that if I did this and was involved in a crash on a public street I would not be covered and even worse if I have a passanger I could be sued and lose everything.

Just a word of caution.

That's why I went with on all the time by changing AWS to "no" - of course then not safe for infant or young child so do not put them in car if you go this approach.

My front airbag works, it is on manual, I need to insert a key and turn it on. The side airbag is not there.

What got me was my insurance agent was talking about the side air bag based on my questions to him....maybe he is confused or correct I do not know but he was going on that the factory safety systems/ air bag in general is tampered with and in the case of an accident I would not have much to stand on in court if I disable any of the airbags.

mkk62 is infamous around these parts
i have heated Adaptic sport seats being put back in and the gt3 race seats taken out.in a 997s .originally when i had the race seats put in, i had the dealer "flash" so the car thought that there was no airbag in seat...so no light.it worked great.......now adding the seat with airbag i get the light and will have that reflashed to read that there is an airbag...

.

question...since i put the seat back in (adaptic SS) the airbag light is on and the heated seats do not work...is the airbag control unit linked somehow to the heated seats and will the reflash to turn the airbag light off also re activate the heated seats? that is what my local mechanic told me..
there isn't a specific fuse for the heated seat module as i thought that might be the issue..everything else on the seat and dash works...thanks

Obsessed..i broke down and trading in for a 996 gt3

You may need to have the dealer reprogram the heated seat option via the PIWIS.

Congrats on the 996 GT3, they are awesome cars!

996 GT3 - sweet! Congrats! Should be great! Enjoy! I am still holding out for a 997 GT3. I do not believe heated seat required programming, but easy enough to confirm with whoever is doing your reprogram for the airbag. I asume you are sure you reinstalled all the connectors for each seat

yes but i am trading in the car to a dealer far away and they are going to reprogram..i dont want to find out that the heaters are broken (seats are practically brand new) just wondering if anyone has had this happen

yeah i think the 6 gt3 will be fun and tossable..also with a little less $ value, i will be more likely to push the limits ...a 997gt3 i would wax it and look at it much prettier

also no electronics and a little more raw feeling in the 6 gt3 should make it a great track car..i have driven in a couple and cant wait....

Agree, too much in the car and less comfortable pushing it. One thing for me is everything in my 997s can move to 997 GT3 - rollbar, motons, upgraded sways etc. Just waiting for prices to drop a bit more.

996 GT3 is great also, among fastest cars at most track days. Let's see, add rollbar, harnesses, Motons or JRZ's, 245/35-18 F and 315/30-18 R Hoosier R6's - people will have trouble getting by you... Heck, they'll have trouble catching you before you add that stuff too.
