Pro's and con's of a short throw shifter?

Hi all,

With all these threads recently regarding which short throw shifter to buy, I was just wondering what the pro's and con's are in having one installed?

I dont track my car and never plan on doing so. Its strictly a daily driver for work and for a few weekend jaunts to restaurants, etc...

Beyond the track, it it useful at all for daily road driving?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

There is only one real drawback to short shift kits and that's simply the fact that when cold, some gears, normally first, can be a little tough to get into. As far as I know, there are no other problems with the kits.

I've had one on my 911S for 2 years now, I love it and I'd never have another 911 without it!

I would also add that your location plays heavily into the cold start issues. Since you're in LA, I would say you'd never have an issue ever. Up in Boston however, 2nd gear didn't exist for me for at least 5-10 minutes (December through Mid-March). The feel, however, is fantastic...once you try it, you'll never want to go back.

Excuse my ignorance, but is a SSK only the stuff underneath the boot? Meaning, it wouldn't change my actual shifter that is above the boot or would it? Thanks!

You are correct, it only changes the parts under the boot. It's a hidden mod.

It won't change the **** or the boot, but at the expense of being obvious it will affect how far the **** moves from neutral position when it is in a gear.

One thing to note: It's easy to add after the fact (I did it myself and I'm hardly a mechanical genius), so if you're considering a pre-owned car, I wouldn't make it an absolute requirement. The parts are in the $500-700 range IIRC.
