Updated iPhone now I can't play music
Hmm, not really any constant problems after I updated to 4.0.2. It seems to be somewhat finicky though - today twice it refused to play any music, said "iPod not ready." But it did play music the other two times I was in the car. I'll keep an eye on it, going to be on the road a lot this week.

Exactly the same thing happened to me after I upgraded to the OS 4.0 (?0.1). Then it just started working again. Every once in a while it won't work, but for the most part it does. I had it checked out by Porsche while I was having some other work done but they couldn't replicate the problem and said they hadn't heard of anyone else with the problem.
Those of you that are having sporadic problems, what version of iPhone do you have? I have an iPhone 4 running OS 4.0.2 and it's working perfectly. No problems whatsoever.

When I updated to 4.02 it totally crashed my iPhone 3GS. I had to entirely rebuild the OS, from scratch. It lost about half of the music stored on the phone, and the rebuild will not accept the re-download of those songs from iTunes on my computer. The phone will now also not accept the ringtone of Bach's first cello suite that I had made. I think they may have done something to prevent use of things not purchased from iTunes.

The problem with iOS 4.x on the iPhone 3GS is a known problem. I am not sure if there is a fix or if it simply reflects the reality of a more demanding OS on a slower machine. I'd call Apple support.
If the death grip is an issue (or if you just hate ATT), I suggest that you wait until mid-January when there will be a new iPhone with a new internal antenna and a CDMA chip and a new host, Verizon.
I assume that Verizon will be better than ATT until its network is as overwhelmed by data-hungry iPhones as ATT currently is. Who knows, when everyone dumps ATT for Verizon, it may work better under a lesser load. But, based on its track record, I would not underestimate the ability of ATT to find a way to fail.
