Best method for cleaning a cabriolet top

I'm new to being a cabriolet owner. I asked my detailer about how to best clean my cabriolet top, and he said, "just wipe it". Hmmm. Maybe time for a new detailer . So I'm wondering what you or your car-care professional use on the top? I'm not looking for super deep clean, but I live in a dusty environ and unless I'm fanatic about the car cover (usually), it does get dirty really very quickly. And of course the black top shows it so well. What do you use when you're doing a driveway wash/touch-up/detail?

Microfiber (lots of drag)? big sponge? soft brush? With fabric soap? We have lots of very soft boar hair bristle brushes in the barn, and if I snuck one off to the car wash supply cabinet, I doubt the horses would miss it. Is that the way to go, or am I just begging to be plucking loose bristles out of my top fabric?

Recommendations, tip, hints, things to absolutely avoid?

I've used the two Raggtop products to clean and to protect. I think they are pretty good.

I have to say that I don't have a Cab and don't have Porsche experience in this. However, with my previous convertible (which was in a few car shows) I used a cleaner and protectant from a marine company - T303 cleaner and T303 protectant. It can be found at any West Marine store and is a gentle but effective cleaner and the protectant is awesome. Not greasy, has significant UV protection and is very adherent.

Couple threads to check:

Only when needed, I like the Swissvax Leather Brush, http://www.detailersdomain.com/swiss...therbrush.aspx and agree on the Raggtopp products. Blue tape off the top when you're applying.

x2 for ragg topp

http://www.wolfsteins.com/product-all.htm

get the cleaner and the protectant

follow the direction on the back

once u apply the protectant, its a breeze to clean the second time around.. just rinse with water.

i would stay away from any kind of brush.. bristles are not good for rag tops.

i heard of others using power/steam wash.. but i would be careful with that as well.

I have used both the 303 product and the raggtopp products. I have not noticed any difference between the two, they both worked well.

Just did mine on sunday with the Raggtopp cleaner and a soft horsehair brush. Finished with 3 light coats of the Raggtopp protectant. Very happy with the result except for the overspray on the glass which is a bit of a pain to remove. Any suggestions?

303 works great on my S2000 top. Haven't tried Raggtop yet.

I use one of those lint rollers that are meant to be used to remove same from clothing.

I bought and never used the Rag Top brand kit. I no longer have my Boxster, PM me if you want the kit.

The spray trigger stopped working on my nearly full bottle of 303. This is the first time in four years of using 303 that I had that happen.
So what did I do? I put on a disposable rubber glove poured the 303 on the top & rubbed it all around.
No overspray on the glass or the paint & it took less than 5 minutes to do the whole top. In six months I'll do it again.
Rain beads up better & runs off faster on the top than on the paint.
Looks like I will be waxing the car this weekend.

Most of the time, I just hose off the top. It doesn't need soap as often as the rest of the car.

When I want to do more thorough cleaning, a gentle horse hair brush and regular auto wash soap (use soap that looks "clear" {translucent} in the bottle rather than cloudy; just need about a teaspoon in a bucket).

RaggTopp protectant works great. I don't leave my car out much, (if I know it's going to sit in the sun for hours, I often cover it) so -- about a once per year application is plenty for me.
