My first Porsche and Initial Impressions

I am IMPRESSED! Well, I just finished my first week of owning this 2009 Carerra... 3.6L with PDK.

In past I've owned:

IROC Camaro Z28
Mazda RX-7 (last model, curvy)
BMW 325
BMW Z3
Infiniti G35
Corvette C5
Corvette C6 Z06 (565hp)
BMW 530i
BMW M6

I sold the Z06 (mostly garaged, weekend car with 4200mi in 2 years) to save about $60,000 to put down on an 07 Murcielago... then the wife wanted to re-do the kitchen, so my savings plan was put on hold... traded my beat up daily drive 530i in on an 07 BMW M6 since the 2 year plan on a Murcielago turned into a 3-5 year plan... THEN, the M6 started having a lot of problems, and with the warranty running out in January 2011, I didn't want to get stuck with a major repair bill... so I traded the M6 back in on the 2009 Carrera...

This is my first Porsche... I finally figured out the programming stalk, very cool to select songs from the Ipod in the dash, the NAV is excellent, and the Chrono is a great feature too... I know the base 3.6L Carerra isn't as fast as my Z06.. but....

PDK? I wasn't too keen on the paddle shifters on the M6, but these lighting fast shifts on the PDK are phenomenal!!! I know the base Carerra 3.6L isn't anywhere near as fast as the Z06, but the "seat of your pants" feel sure is! The Z06 is bigger, but the suspension feels like a Cadillac compared to the 997.2! Sitting and driving in my Porsche, I truly feel like I'm wearing a body glove... I really feel like I'm part of the car, I didn't get that from the Z06 in which that car I felt like I was just along for the ride.

With the M6 having potential high costs with the clutch and engine... got me rethinking the whole Murcielago thing...

I'm going to drive this 09 911 for a while... but when the kitchen is done, I'm thinking I'm probably going to forgo the Lamborghini/Ferrari dream I had and get another Porsche... this time, one factory ordered how I want it... I was willing to spend $180K-ish for a Murci, but for that price I can get a brand-spankin-new 911 TURBO

Sheesh... I'm 46 years old, I can't believe I've haven't ever considered driving a Porsche before... Wish I would have driven one 10 years ago... woulda saved me a whole lotta money!

I'm probably not telling you guys anything you don't know already or you wouldn't be here... but this Porsche truly is the best car I've driven to date, and probably the most well built too!

Congratulations! I am a first time Porsche owner too. This is the first sports car I ever owned and sure it won't be the last. This hobby is addicting. I plan to master all the stock capabilities of this car to the max before upgrading. I have just learned to appreciate all the qualities of this base car and it is awesome. I am still awaiting my fvd sports exhaust which I think is the only mod I will make. I hate the high ride height but it is so practical that I don't worry about scraping it. My plan is another Porsche, maybe a gt3, but a 991 model. I also would like a super car but not in the next 2 years.

I know the feeling. I guess we all do! My garage hasn't been as extensive as yours but I know what you mean about being a part of the car and vice versa. I've never felt as though a car has been a better match for me than my Carrera. As happy as I am with it and the Porsche brand, it makes me want more Porsches! Yikes. The GT cars have really caught my attention and I intend to own one in the future but this little 3.6l Carrera will be a forever remembered car. My first and not last Porsche. Love it.

To the OP: as you say, been there, done that. You saw the light. Enjoy!

And BTW, it's not about the power either.

welcome to the club

I'm also a first time porsche owner and let me tell you I'm in love. I did your plan backwards. I bought the lambo than bought the porsche. I don't regret buying the lambo but I might have passed if I already owned my 911s. They are very different cars. The lambo is fun to date. the porsche is the one you marry.

If we hadn't owned the others ,we would not know the

precision and sheer artistry of the Porsche.I have owned over 45 cars including the highest luxury cars. NOTHING comes close to the Porsche.I took it to a Ferrari Owner's Club event and got more comments from the Ferrari owners than they did. Welcome!

Congrats and welcome to the club, Mark.
I am myself a first-time Porsche owner, too. Had a dream of owning a Porsche when I was in 2nd year in college but that dream was put on hold due to other circumstances. Forward to 23 yrs later and here I am in my first 911. It won't be my first and last Porsche, I can tell you that.
