Windshield cracked for no reason????
Windshield cracked for no reason????
Came home from the high country cabin on Sunday-- parked the C2s and then when I pulled out of the garage on Tuesday-- noticed a 6 inch crack in the windshield from about the middle of the bottom of the glass up!!! OK, after I calmed down and recited all the "7 Words That You Can't Say On Television" (RIP, George Carlin), I noticed that there was no sign of 'trauma' around the crack-- no pits indicating a stone impact, not even any bug guts around it. It's like it just cracked from a severe change in temperature or torsional stress or something-- peculiar. Replacement will cost around $500 since I don't have glass coverage on my State Farm policy (probably stupid-- it only costs $80 per year), but I have never needed it before on all my previous cars.
I have heard that European cars have softer glass than domestic ones, and might be thinner for gas economy, etc-- but have any of you experienced any calamity such as this-- on any car, let alone a P-car??

Glass cracks only when compromised. A small pit, even if you can't see it, is enough to make the glass weaker at that point. Torsional stress and/or changes in temp can cause cracks to run more easily than you would think.
Sucks.
Sucks.
Insurance policies vary but mine covers the cost of a new windshield minus a $200 deductable. The cost of a windshield repair ( with resin) is covered 100%. This makes sense if they can avoid replacing a windshield for ~$1,000.

Not the case. Nationwide paid dealer 1100$ to replace mine. Glass coverage is standard option.
norton , the exact same thing happened to my c2s two weeks ago-- when i came out during lunch break and the weather was very hot two weeks ago in LA , i found about 12 inch crack right from the top middle of the windshield (the crack was U shape). I could'nt figure out, i guess the heat had something to do with it.
Have you hit a pothole in the last few weeks. I hit one in a BMW 335. Examined the car all looked well. About 10 days later my front passenger tire developed a welt (thankfully covered by tire replacement warranty). About 3 weeks after the incident my windshield developed a foot long crack around the rear view mirror.
Windsheild cracked for no reason???

-- your situation is similiar to mine-- no reason for the crack-- and there it is. Talked to several glass shops-- they claim all it takes is an almost imperceptible hit to the glass to weaken it enough to begin a crack. I was suprised they all said that if "you can cover the crack with a dollar bill" then it could be repaired for about $100-- versus $650 for a replacement. Mine WAS much less than that big when I started the drive to a job interview-- but boy it traveled to much bigger- now I'm stuck with replacement. I was firm in requiring an OEM replacement-- but one shop said even Mercedes and BMW are using OEM windsheilds from CHINA now in Europe (????). But also told me that she had one installed on her Tahoe and that she wouldn't do it again.... Like I said-- gotta get State Farm glass coverage on this one. I cut the glass policy to save money since I have been out of a job for 14 months-- had to economize a bit, but sure turned out to be "penny wise and pound foolish" on this one.....
