Hey fellas - I recently acquired an 08 C4S Targa, CPO, 28,500 miles.
I've noticed an intermittent knocking noise from the engine, distinct from the sweet rumble of the engine at idle.

Even after driving for 45 minutes, at idle I can still occasionally hear this knocking sound. I called the dealer (Porsche of Arlignton) and the service dept. told me it is normal for 997's to have this sound and that it is related to the lifters.


Does this make sense? Is this just how they sound?

probably normal. these engines kind of sound like crap when idling IMO.

 

Congrats on the Targa. I saw that on their lot for sale. It looked like a very nice car.

 

I have a knocking as well. Sounds like something is being knocked around every once in a while. I thought it might be a belt or a pulley, because the it also squeeks here and there.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it!

 

Sean, it would be best to have the car evaluated by a good independent mechanic they probably will want to bore scope. I still have the same car and I ended up having scored cylinders in one and six. The engine was replaced under Porsche warranty.
