getting a 2011 targa 4s or get 2012
I think the announced changes for 2012 provide THE reason to order a 2011 Targa.
IMHO, you've already made the right move. Sounds as though the 2012 will be longer and wider with a Panamera-like center stack. The Panamera interior is not to my taste, and longer / wider sounds like less fun.

I wouldn't count on Targas being part of the initial 991 lineup. In fact, based on prior series, they won't release the Targas for at least one year after the coupes.
I agree with MathFuzzy that the 991s seem somewhat less "fun" for the reasons he stated. On the other hand, if its true that they will deliver around 414hp, that's a pretty good bump from the 997.2.
If you do pull the trigger on the 2011, pls post pics and better yet invite me over for a look!

i'd love to see an improved roof assembly on the 991 targa. imo, the current glass top is good not great. more open top (like the targas of old) and no limited rear visibility are on my wishlist. porsche can do better, and i have a feeling they will in the next series. that might be worth waiting for.
Or maybe ask a last year 993 owner how they felt when the 996 came out.
(and I don't mean to disparage the 996 for those who like them - I saw a very nice one today - it just never was right to me)I worry a bit about the next 911. I had an e39 M5 I gave up thinking surely the next big thing would be better. And all it was, was bigger - not better - not as good even.

Just sayin'...latest and greatest is not a given.

Understand what you're saying but I have a hard time believing the next 911 will be a dissapointment, if it is, well enjoy the new cheaper 2nd hand prices of the now "old" 997.
I know I would've waited
I know I would've waited
Historically the first model year of a new generation 911 is a bit of a hybrid of the last and new generation rather than the whole package. This has been the case with the transition from 993 to 996 as well as 996 to 997.
So, between a 2011 and 2012, I would go with the 2011 in a heartbeat. I would wait until at least MY2013 to get into a 998 when the model has matured a bit.
In the case of the Targa, you probably won't see the next gen Targa until MY 2013 anyways. If they do have MY2012 Targa, it will must likely be based on the current gen 997.2. They did this when the 997 first came out, they still offer the turbo and targa based on the 996 platform.

My guess? "All new" means "all new" wih the next Carrera.
My guess is that it will be more refined, smoother, faster, and more comfortable. Whether it will have that old-school 911 feeling is the real question. It looks incredible in the spy pics, at least to me, with serious road presence.
if the wait is less than 1 year i would wait and get the new model....otherwise id buy now....(not sure when they update the targa etc - ex. it will be 2-3 yrs before the turbo S is updated)
