Mod

So what do you think would be the best mod for a 997 C2S for under $500? gundo hack? Sways?

Putting the Christmas request list together and trying to come up with something.

well i am addicted to autocross and will be doing some DE events this coming year.

Car is going in for a sport clutch, IMS upgrade, and LWFW replacement shortly.. so maybe something that compliments this nicely? The hard thing about porsche is anything worth doing is $750+

Easy answer

I suggest B/M short shift kit (or the factory OEM kit).... easily best mod for the money and actually enhances the feel/drive in many ways... stock shift set up is a slop box....sorry but it is. Assuming not one installed as an option from factory already. Trust me on this....

IMHO in order,

997.1: OEM SSK, gundo
997.2: SharkWerks primary exhaust bypass (a little over $500 but hey, it's xmas), OEM SSK

YMMV,

If you do a lot of autocross, save your money, and get a LSD when you can afford it. You will be amazed at how much sooner you can get the power on coming out of a corner.

I realize you're reccomending it so I know you must like it but I'm just being sure here. Have you used an OEM SSK on the 997.2? Could you talk a bit about the pro's/con's with it? I'm interested in trying out this mod. Thanks!

Hey, NorthVan. Would you rec an aftermarket LSD or OEM? I miss having an LSD and was thinking I might play around with getting this mod, too. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

To the OP, like it was mentioned, it is a bit more than $500 but the Bypass from Sharky is most enjoyable.

Absolutely, it is an awesome upgrade, especially since you are on the track! I wonder why Porsche supplied the original 997's with an open differential.

Talk to Matt Monson at Guards, he will get you what you need.

suncoast has the factory short shifter for $429 that sounds like a pretty good deal. Maybe i will put that on the list..

other items i saw was an x51 oil pan.. If i get a cold air intake that will put me in a different autocross class... i would love to get some AWE cats but i am what you might call a poor porsche owner. lol

X51 Pan isn't needed, that is a 996 upgrade, 997s already have the baffles.

CAI puts you in another class WTF? all it does is make noise.

I would not recommend it if I did not have it. The SSK was the first mod I did on my 997.2. I had it on my 996 and just could not live without it.

It really does two things for me:

(1) It reduces the travel (duh). That being said, I would say that the STD to SSK diff on a 997 is not as big as on a 996 but it still is a little shorter travel.

(2) The biggest improvement for me is a more positive shifter feeling as I find the SSK to be "notchier" for lack of a better term. When on the track, I like to feel that the gear is really engaged and really like that feeling of "pushing" through the gate to get the gear in.

Just my 0.02, YMMV.

T.

P.S.: If you have the dough, I'm with NorthVan, go for LSD. For $500 though, you will barely get the "L"...

Excellent feedback, T. Thank you. Both the LSD and SSK would be a fun couple o' things to add.

I have the factory SSK, don't know what the car is like without it.
