Hi all 30 min ago I was slowing down at a traffic light I put gear into nutural as I took my foot off the clutch the engine stopped I started the car I couldn't put it in nutural and gear only goes into 3rd and 4th what could it be is it clutch cable or something else? thanks

 

It is probably the gear shift cables.

 

To fix them I will have to take the gear down?

 

+1, the dealer will replace the cable only. If you are off warranty, get the cup cable.

 

Northvan will they have to take the gear out? What cup cable and can I drive home about 15 km or it better to tow it?

 

They do not need to take the gearbox out. The cost for parts and labor will be $500 or so. It is a set of cables that connects the gear shift to the gear box.

Better to tow than to try and drive in 3rd gear from standstill.

I had the same thing happen between 1st and 2nd gear and could only move in 1st. Flatbed to mechanic's shop. 2 hours work plus part.

 

It doesn't require the gear box to come out, mine broke while stuck in 2nd and I managed to make it home (about 60KM), and told my son that where ever we stop is where we leave the car. We managed to make it home, and for the first time in my life, I made it through all the stop lights to my home while the were green...at least something went right that morning.
