Multifunction Steering - what can the PCM Screen Button do?

The multifunction steering wheel has a user configurable button on it, described in the little bit of documentation in my owners manual, as the 'pcm screen' button or something like that.

The implication is that this steering wheel button is a somewhat 'user programmable' behavior where one can set some screen from the PCM to come up when the button is pressed.

Can someone with a 2010+ multi-function wheel clarify what the choices are for selecting what happens when that button is pressed?

I think it is the one labeled: [[]]

In replacing my wheel with a heated wheel on my 2009, I'm considering adding multifunction as well, and the utility of that option depends, somewhat, on what I can do with that programmable button.

Specifically, I'm wondering if I can program that button to turn of the PCM screen with just that one button click, vs the info->config->pcm->screen->screen off->confirm 6-button-press sequence.

Wheel update

I believe we spoke before. I put a 2010 heated wheel on my 09' 6 speed and it took 6 trips to the dealer...

I had to buy the wheel, airbag (I had the triangle from stock), control module and then....a 2010 clock spring - for the heat to work.

I love the wheel. It's worth it.

The programmable button is programmed through the PCM. Once your mf wheel is activated by the dealer, you'll have a multi-function wheel sub menu of the info tab. There are number of functions you can assign to the button. I use next track, since there is no dedicated button for FF or RW audio tracks on the wheel. I use it all the time.

Good luck. Let me know if you have any issues.

Regards,
David R. Peck

P.S. I think you can utilize the existing techquipment coupon for all these items. The control unit and clock spring were about $400 in total I believe.

You can program to rotate through the top level screens, jump to a particular screen, etc.

I use it as a Map hotkey so I jump quickly back to the Map display. I would rate that feature as moderately useful.

I'll have to find if I have a techquipment coupon...

I'll ask Suncoast about the clock spring.. they didn't mention that in the list of things.

They did say that even if I have the 2009 6spd round steering wheel already, I STILL have to buy a new airbag because the airbag/wheel design in the 2010 changed such that the old airbag from the 2009 will not work int the 2010, even if its the round one. Grrr.

So I know I can get there, its just a matter of trying to make sure all the parts are ordered first.

What I'm trying to find out from those that have the multi-function though, is what the restrictions are on programming that optional button. I may have to just sit in a car with the multifunction wheel and have the dealer demo the feature to me to be sure.

For next track I can hit the key on above the PCM display or use the voice recognition system.. so I'm good there.

The other thought I had, was options other than leather, for the rim, because I noticed that after only 10k miles, the grey leather on my existing wheel is getting darker. But I'm not sure there are any better long-wear alternatives.

I put an '09 MF wheel on my car soon after I got it - they didn't order anything special for it, just the MF wheel and my airbag fit fine. I reckon you are having to do '10 since you have 6spd?

So MF "user" button:

- scroll main menus
- set as any PCM menu button (sound, source, info, map, etc)
- Push To Talk for Voice Control
- Next Station or Track
- Traffic Info
- Display Dark

Pretty sure that is all. Great shortcut for Display Dark that is normally buried down in the menus.

Yup, because I have the 6spd, there was no 09 option for heated or multi function wheel. The 10+ MY solutions are the only choices.. ie a whole new wheel (since the 6spd manual cars got the old 997.1 round wheels.)

Good to know I can get to the one thing I really want.

Now its just a choice of color of the plastic (painted silver or black).. I'm thinking black as it blends better with most of the dash plastic, whereas only the door pulls and glovebox handle are painted silver.

Time to place an order, and wait, and wait, and wait.

Thanks for all of your help and feedback.

So once it comes in and is installed... who wants a 997.1 stone-grey round, extra thick steering wheel (Option XPA) with airbag?
