CMOS - I posted something similar a few weeks ago. My chirp is intermittent and only pops up here and then. One thing I've noticed though - - when I engage first gear and I'm easy on the gas (meaning barely) the sound goes away and has not come back. It's only when I'm consistently giving too much gas in engaging first that I get the sound.

There are a couple of posts on Rennlist that discuss this chirp sound and, this is where I got the idea of taking it easy on the gas, which is sound advice anyway to extend the life of the clutch.

Hope this helps. BTW, I have a 6speed 2007C2.

CMOS- I'm the guy from the other post with the noise problem.
Ahhh the $$$$ question... . I’m about to sell the car over all of my clutch issues.
The noise has something to do with your clutch, or the way it is engaging. I'm sure of it. Don’t look anywhere else. I've heard that noise way too much.

I had an aftermarket clutch put in and that’s when it started for me.
The solution on my car was to finally switch brands of clutch disk to SACS. I have no noise now, but also the clutch doesn’t work (for potentially yet another reason)

Everyone that listened to my car’s noise had a different opinion on what it would be. I had lots of people tell me different things.

I have three really important questions for you..
-Have you ever had any clutch work done on the car?
-Did it start when it got cold?
-Do you track your car?

My personal Clutch Hell:
1) Pedal sticking down problems
2) New Clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, slave cylinder $$$$
3) Pedal OK. Clutch noise starts.
4) New flywheel to fix $$$$
5) Noise still happens
6) Change clutch brands. $$$$
7) Noise gone.
8) Pedal now sticking down again…

I had this exact same noise happen to me (2005 C2S) on many occasions yesterday. It was after a day of stop and go traffic and about 125 + miles of driving and a Hairstylist (oh please let me drive it) grinding a shift. After letting the car cool off for a few hours and a 50 mile drive home the noise never reappeared again. I took the car out today to purposely do 30 minutes of stop and go without a hiccup. It seems to have completely went away. The car shifts smoothly and the clutch grabs like normal so I am a bit perplexed about the issue myself.

normally if the pedal gets stuck to the floor the master or slave is bad.
fluid is leaking past the internal seals.

The description in your earlier post doesn't sound like my noise or the one in that video, Dave. I interpret 'chirp' as being a little too cheerful for this noise. Maybe an ostriche hitting puberty could manage a chirp like this, but if I had to pick an animal sound, something reptilian or amphibian would suggest itself. A bullfrog being stomped by a bull in mid-croak might manage this sound...

I mention that because we may not be dealing with the same issue, even though mine certainly seems like a glazed area on the clutch plates. If it is glazing, then I think it's pessimistic to insist on new plates to fix the issue. Normal enthusiastic driving for a couple of thousand miles ought to relieve the noise and its underlying problem. If your clutch failed completely shortly thereafter, I'd say your dealer was not identifying all the issues ahead of that time.

Gary,

I had never given the noise enough thought to liken it to a crushed mid croak bullfrog, that's pretty funny! However you are correct, a chirp is perhaps not the exact comparison, particularly when compared with such interesting examples as posted above.

I've listened to the videos and it is indeed the same noise I had. Dealer said hot spots or glazed clutch but I couldn't clear it with my driving at all. My clutch went out probably 4-5k miles later but was not because of this necessarily. When the dealer replaced it they inspected the plates regarding the noise and so they say at least, it matched their diagnosis.

The noise never returned with the new clutch.

To be fair, some would liken it to a hogs landing on a brick-paved road in a fall from a truck taking it to a Taipei market -- often phoneticized as squark or even quawnk. But insisting on technical jargon is useless. Let us not be petty.

I'm glad it hasn't returned, Dave. Offhand, it sounds like your chirp/squark/quawnk was related to some larger problem that eventually dealt your clutch the death blow. I hope the OP has better luck. And uh... me too.

Disengaging the clutch fork can cause a squeaking noise. It is not a big deal and most people do not go to the trouble of eliminating it. There are other clutch noises which point to worn parts which should be attended to.

here's my post from the 996 forums:

well, i got my car back from the shop, drove over 150kms this weekend and haven't heard even an incling of this sound return. FINALLY!!! after almost a year of this annoyance - the love affair with my car is back!

i don't have a definite answer to what the exact cause of the noise is because I had a whole bunch of stuff done, unrelated to the sound. 2 things that could have been a cause according to my mechanic:

clutch dragging - my master clutch cylinder had to be replaced as the pins was smushed and wasn't fully disengaging the clutch.

idler pulleys - replaced all 3, they were ceased to crap and barely rolled, glazing my serpentine belt.

hope that helps. I'd say get your idler pulleys checked first as that's an easy fix and the most suspect as the root of this weird sound.

It sounds like the same exact noise I had coming from my car after the rear main seal was changed. A creaking noise while letting the clutch out. If you put the car into sport mode I bet you can make it happen everytime you come out of 1st. It turned out to be the pressure plate on my clutch. The clutch and pressure plate was changed (Sachs OEM) and I dropped a light weight fly wheel in while I was there and the noise completely went away. 7k miles later and its still perfect.
