2-stage Sunroof Opening

I've had my car for almost one year and I don't use the sunroof much, but I just figured out that there is a 2nd stage to the opening process.

When I hold my switch till the sunroof stops, it still is 'open' by a couple of inches. I thought that's as far as it went. For some reason, I started pressing the switch again and - lo and behold - it opened all the way.

I'm not sure if I'm the dumbest guy here, but just in case someone else was unaware, I thought I'd let folks know about this...

You can also get to stage one by just touching the open button, then once it stops, touch it again and it will open all the way. To close it, you just need to touch the close button. I think they changed this in the 997.2 so that you have to hold the button down to close but I see you have an 06S in your sig.

You're not dumb - lots of folks haven't read the entire owner's manual.

I made an effort to pour through the manual when I first got the car, but I think I skipped the sunroof section, as I wasn't a fan of them until a few months ago...

I'm Dumb....just went for a spin with my for one of the first nice days in seattle with the windows and sunroof open (which I rarely do), and I was wondering how come the sundroof didn't open all the way. You get rep points from me for helping me out even though you thought you would look dumb.

I noticed that function as well...not sure what compelled Porsche to have an 85% open stop and require another button push for 100%. At any rate, I love the sunroof but rarely use it once I noticed how much the headliner flops around while driving. There doesn't seem to be much structure around the internal sunroof mechanisms; it looks like they just draped the alcantara (or whatever it is) over the whole thing and attached it around the edges of the roof. Anyone else notice or concerned about this?

The sunroof opens this way for noise reduction concerns. The first position is supposed to be the most efficient open position noise wise.

I immediately noticed that the roof head liner flaps around just above the rear window. That can't be good for the head liner over the long term. I wish Porsche had used a molded cloth headliner. It would be vastly superior. Perhaps they can't get one of those into the car.

The 85% stop is also on our Passat. It also can be extened to 100%. (The MB simply has a smaller sunroof). This ( 85%) is the setting that really reduces the buffeting which can occur at common speeds ( eg 40 mph). Those mini spoilers that pop up when opening the sunroof don't do too much except perhaps to minimize debri entering the car.

I would order any car without a sunroof if I could. I simply don't use them.

My '05 also had buffeting at 40mph and the headliner "flap". Interestlingly my '09 has a completely different design sunroof lip that eliminates buffeting and headliner flap. First of any of my cars of any make that had sunroofs that doesn't buffet!

This is pretty standard for most European cars over the past 20 years.

+1

One additional point......with many sedans, you can open the rear side windows about 1.5 inches each and have the sunroof and front side side windows fully open without buffeting.

Thanks. That's why I posted. I searched thread titles for 'sunroof' and didn't see anything on this, so I threw it out there in case someone would learn something.
Cheers!

After looking at where the roof stopped on several occasions I thought it had to open more. Once I got it all the way back I realized why Porsche stopped it in the first location. With my roof open all the way I can't stand the noise.

I am with you on not wanting a sunroof....I had to special order my MB E320 DD when I ordered the car because they every MB delivered to the US had a sunroof. THe dealer fought me every step of the way telling me it was a huge mistake. If you sit in the car, the headroom is cavernous because of no sun roof.
