40K dealership checkup necessary?

Got my CPO 2007 C2 September of last year 2010 with 30k miles. As my daily driver for now I've quickly reached 40k. Dealer is charging $830 for the "major" 40k mile check up. Is this really necessary or can I simply change the oil and the oil filter myself?

I just did mine. I also did the spark plug change (4 years) + brake fluid change (every 2 years) and some other verifications.

Better that a problem be spotted early then when something breaks IMO

That's true and normally I would, I was just thinking that all that service must've been recently worked
in within this year because I bought it when it was newly certified pre owned right? Unsure.

It all depends on when your car was put in service and what maintenance was done on the car before your purchased it. If the car was put in service in lets say september 06 than the dealer where you purchased the car should've done that maintenance prior to delivery to you since the car would've been 4 years old at that point... Odds are though that your 07 was delivered later then that date. So this would be its first major maintenance as it just turned 4 years old...

Check your maintenance booklet. If a major service was done already, you shouldn't do it again... If it wasn't, I would get it done.

When you purchased your car, did you check the carfax? Did it say maintenance was performed? If yes, then an oil/filter change should be sufficient.

On your CPO checkout form it should say if the 4year/40,000 mile major service was done. You may need to do it if not done to maintain the CPO warranty from what I understand.

+1. Major Service is a Porsche recommended interval at 4 yrs or 40k miles. The $830 the dealer quoted likely does not include plugs. With plugs you are looking at more like $1300. To maintain warranty, you can choose any reputable indy shop which will charge a little less. You don't have to do warranty service at the dealer.

Mine just had the 40,000 service and it was $1100 with plugs snd with out the brake fluid flush. They wanted another 300 for the brake flush. I cant figure out why Porsche wants you to flush the brake fluid so often?

At least every 2 years. Annually is not unheard of. Fluid is hydrostatic, ie absorbs water to the detriment of the entire brake system. Find a good indie shop for a 50% discount

Yeh it will absorb water if left open. But the brake system is sealed and there is no way you will get water in there. I might understand if you track the car and have alot of heat, but normal driving there should be no problem going 100,000 or more miles. Changing more than that is just BS to get you to spend money. $300 for a 30 min job and some brake fluid is just crazy anyway.

Did you ask just to waste my (or others) time? 3 minutes of my life I'll never get back. You go 100,000 miles on your brake fluid.

Nope but you will for sure be wasting money if you change your brake fluid every two years. Unless you track the car or put alot more that average miles that most Porsches.

Seems crazy to me to worry about a few hundred dollars when it comes to one of the most important parts of the car.

Don't get me wrong. I will flush it when needed. But I will do it myself. Not because it had been two years but when it needs it.
