New to Porsche
Hi Guys,
I'm trading in my s2000 and putting a deposit on a used 997 tomorrow, the car seems to check out, two previous owners but in excellent condition and CPO. Any advise before I dive in? Here's the car

Yes, go play with that slick-shifting gearbox in your S2000 a few more times. Nothing tops it.
Checked out the autotrader ad too. I'm sure you've researched it but you do realize that is the slowest, er, least aggressive of any 911 in the range? AWD, base Carrera? If you're coming from an S2000 my guess is you've got a performance bug. That being said a Carrera 4 will give you all-weather security (do you need this in Tampa?) and a great chassis and package. You are not going to gain much in performance from your S2000. Not to pee in your presumably excited punch bowel but you would be better served with a Carrera S or even a base Carrera than a Carrera 4. Frankly, you might consider a Cayman S if you want the next natural leap from the S2000 (or a Boxster if the softop is your thing). Lastly, they are asking way too much for an 06 Carrera 4.

Make sure you get a DME print out to make sure no over-revs and make sure you close the deal subject to an acceptable PPI. DO NOT BUY THE CAR UNTIL YOU HAVE IT INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT PARTY TO CONFIRM NO PAINT WORK, ACCIDENTS, LEAKS, PROBLEMS ETC. Do not trust the selling dealer simply because it's a CPO car.
Looks pretty nice. It appears to be the 4S (red calipers, twin pipes on each tail pipe) and not the base Carrera 4 as noted in the ad, so should be lots of fun. As I'm sure others will tell you, get a PPI and check for over-revs.

No offense, KK Moto, but even a cursory glance at the actual car shows that this is indeed a 4S and not a base. That said, even a base 997 will outperform any S2000 under any circumstances, and that's the facts talking, not just a happy fellow C4S owner. Congrats, Speedphreek!
Now as for my post: No offense taken, crow eaten. But you actually said a "cursory" glance. I actually took a limited, half-azzed, limped-out glance. A cursory glance would reveal it to be a quite good deal to be an actual 4S as several of you have shown. Weakness on my part, I shall go flagellate myself now.
I sold my '04 S2000 for my '05 Carrera S - the most noticeable differences I can remember when I first got the C2S was more low end torque, slightly longer shifts, and better engine note. The S2k fit like a glove, the 997 is dimensionally larger but the car is still very nimble and more powerful! Enjoy the new purchase!

You can get a lower mileage car for the same price, 32,xxx miles isn't that much for an 06 car but I've seen a lot of 2006 with less than 20K miles. As mentioned, PPI and DME at a different Porsche dealership and you should be ready to go.
Thanks for the replies guys, as was mentioned earlier it is in fact a c4s. I had not given thought to an independent inspection because of the cpo status and the fact that there is a warranty of for another or 50k/4yrs i think that's what the salesman said, but I think it may be wiser. I truly loved my S2k, it is a very raw sportscar in my opinion, but i believe the 911 to be a better all rounder whereas the s2k only shines above 6k with the roof back.

2) Red Flag number 2 - Carfax says 2 owners but the ad says one owner .
If they can't list what they are selling with accuracy .. that shows a lot.
I would agree with Larry. Pretty sad if the dealer can't get the car information correct, especially considering it is a Porsche dealer. They should know the difference between a C4 and C4S.
I also went into a 997 from an S2000. Yes- it's nice not to have to wait until 6k to get sone power. But on the other hand, I did fins myself hitting the rev limiter often after the change- that 9k redline is pretty amazing.
BTW, CPO status gives you an additional 2 years or up to 100,000 miles warranty v

A agree with the previous posters - If the dealer can't get the details right, I would take that as a red flag. Also, I know I'm nitpicking now but the freakin license plate holder is crooked. You'd think that if you're prepping a car for sale, you'd fix the little things ...
