Pre-owned 997.2 C2S, Couple of Pricing Questions
Hi guys, long time lurker here. Originally was looking at a 997.1 C4S because 997.2 tail lights didn't do it for me, but they have grown on me and all the discussions about 997.1 vs .2 really swayed me.
A 997.2 C2S would probably would suit me best.
Prices I've seen for low mileage (under 10000) C2S's seem to be at $80000-85000, whereas 3-6 months ago I saw several in the mid $70's. Just wondering if this is due to the summer season?
I know market dictates price, but usually how much play is there in pricing. what is a good starting off point is (5-7% off list)?
My wishlist is:
997.2 Carrera S, Carerra 4, C4S, targa 4, targa 4s
Black or Basalt
Full leather interior (no stone grey)
PDK
Sport chrono
Navigation (preferred not required)
No accidents or stories, clear title

I just looked . Yikes !!!!!
For quite some time there was an 09 2 owner CPO car listed locally in the mid 70's that fit yoir description (private sale ) and I thought even that was overpriced . It's gone . Apparently it must have siold .
I started looking at new cars in my area because if they are asking 80+k for 09 cars I looked to see what new inventories are like .
I only looked at three dealerships (again my area --South Florida ) . I did find a 2011 C4S new which has everything you asked for except full leather . (MSRP 110) .
Nothing else looks even close.

Tomorrow, I'll see if my own sources show anything like the OP wants, but I have a feeling 80k is about right for a low mileage example with those options.

I'm not so sure if it's due to the summer, for the last two years, summer's made no difference. 997 has gone up all across the board. 997.1 to 997.2 in the used market. I look occasionally and it's up about $2-5K, most people still comment that it's this and that much over price hasn't really looked lately. Maybe this is a sign that the economy is getting better, at least around here, there seems to be more job opportunities.

Somebody on this or another board called recently about those launch cars, I guess most of those listed were sold already.

this is so true...when people chime and and state what they paid 1 or 2 years ago; take it with a grain of salt...
everyone got killer deals then.

Yep, everyone got killer deals 2 years ago. No one was buying Porsche's (or anything exotic for that matter). I got my 08 C2S (only one year old) almost fully equipped with only 6k miles on it for $59k. And that was in June.
Things have definitely changed, money is back in circulation.

I personally think you won't find many choices with mileages under ten thousand. The used car databases consider a "low mileage" for a 2009 car to be anything under 30,000 (shortly, they'll say 45k when the 2012 models come out). Porsche would like to see at least 9,000 a year, which is about where our own 2009 will be this Fall. Three years after model release, your ten thousand miles goal is in the range of a garage queen by intent or simply because "life got too busy and I haven't had time to drive it so I'm selling it." Those can be very nice cars, but I suspect everybody who has one to move carries expectations of at least an extra ten percent added to the price.
In other words, I'd say that guy with #720828 above is asking a reasonable amount for a nice car with only 11,000 miles after 30 months. You can find it in PCA sources and if it has no stories, it's worth pursuing I think. Just a couple of thousand fewer miles and I'd have said $80k minimum for that car.
I'm not sure about the percent off list you mention. Do you mean off MSRP? If you do, then the depreciation is much more than that. You can figure at least ten percent in the first six months after initial delivery. A 2009 is nearly three years old and will be at least 20% off MSRP and easily 30%. That unit above had an MSRP of 107k the seller tells us, so he's offering it at 70% of the original sticker. Partially, it depends on the items that make up the MSRP at initial sale. Appearance options depreciate amazingly fast. A set of full leather costing thousands by MSRP might add only a couple of hundred to the selling price as a used car.

I appreciate all the insight. Over 10000 miles definitely isn't a deal breaker as under 15000 would suffice. I tend to keep my vehicles a long time and when I think 911 first thing that comes to mind is round headlights and the second is a black exterior.
I'm in no rush, but would love to have one for the summer (a whole 2 months in Vancouver ). I just found it odd how prices went up rather than down, I guess the demand is greater and people are more comfortable spending money on luxury purchases again.

I took the exterior color choice out of the search and extended the range . Nothing looks good . I can not see paying 75K for an almost three year old car with more than 10K miles .
I've always given my opionion as to when the right time to buy the car is .
This is the time to SEL the Porsche .(in my opinion)

Also keep in mind that prices for everything is going up at a pretty dramatic clip. Just check what's going on in raw commodities ! With the Dollar getting hit as hard as it has it makes used Porsches(as well as other high priced cars) look very cheap to export. BTW Ford just raised prices again for the 3rd time this year.

You know Larry, you're absolutely right on this. Now is a PERFECT time to sell a car - everything is selling high and supply is low. Heck I got my 09 C4 for $72k and I would guess I could easily get that now, more than a year later. But just like the real estate boom years, if you sell, you'll have to spend to get into something else (and it would be another P car for me for sure). Not that getting another car is as essential as getting another home. Well, I take that back, I can't live without my 911!
Occasionally, I like to support the forum by clicking one of the ads and seeing what they have that I might want. These are probably the only ads I really pay attention to these days. A banner ad just showed up a few minutes ago for a Jaguar dealer in Plano Texas. Looks like I could sell our C2S to that poster looking for a low-mileage 2009, buy a new Jaguar XF outright, pay shipping, give California the import tariff, and still have enough cash left over to throw a party for the forum in Monaco this weekend. But damn it, I'd just end up with a luxury sedan, albeit new and with full warranty, not a Porsche.
You have to keep a sense of perspective. Cars like the Carrera are not stocks and bonds, nor even commodities. With this type of car, buying what I want is a matter of buying what I want, not looking for an investment.
Just saying. Gary,

I think this is great advice - buy what you want. So what if you pay a couple of k over if you get the car that makes you happy? After all, anyone thinking of spending $80K+ should be able to afford $82K+ for something that will make them extremely happy...
No, and if pressed, you could always live in it. A sense of perspective is important. Trying taking that old stick-built home to work tomorrow morning.
