Question 08 997S head unit options

Ok, just joined the 997 family yesterday and absolutely love it!!

Now, let's get to the head unit on this 2008. It does not have Navi enabled nor the phone activated (my understanding need to use a SIM card.

So, here are my parameters.

Need to have: Sirius Radio, Bluetooth

Nice to have: Navi, touch screen, iPod adapter

Went to a custom installer and he said he has a unit that ties the Sat radio for Sirius to the existing head unit and it is $950 installed plus tax, sounds steep to me.....

Other option was some Pioneer head unit from Germany apparently that fits flush in place where the stock unit had sat, and comes with touch screen, Bluetooth, Sirius, Navi pretty much but is $1900 installed about. You can set whatever wallpaper you want and apparently one of the choices is a Porache logo so it looks factory. They said they will sell the stock head unit for me also and they are going for like $400-500 on eBay.

Questions are what have other folks done and also will this void any current fActory warranties or extended warranties. I still have a factory warranty and bought an extended warranty for another 5 yes 30k. The service mgr at the local pcar dealer said it could affect the "ring" of the electrical system.

Thanks for any input and guidance in advance.

Even with no Nav, you should still have the complete head unit with display correct?

Nav-TV offers all these modules you are looking for that tie into factory wiring. I would rank all their functionality as B- and iPod interface does not do shuffle, unless used in 'direct' mode with an iPod. I paid around $2300 for all three modules to be installed.

I should really write a review on these here someday.

I think maybe you should ask the dealer if you can put in the 09 newer head unit. I dont knoww if it integrates but it is a good one and has everything you need.
I would find one on ebay or some porsche junk yard

Don't want to hijack the thread, but a related question - I'd like to find a backup camera that interfaces into PCM for my 997.2 Cab; with the top down there's no issue. With the top up, there are major blind spots.

Nav-TV told me they had one but I'd have to send the head unit in to them for installation. Does anyone have any experience with this camera good or bad? Any other choices?

Thanks!

If I were to upgrade the stock head unit, I'd go away from the outdated PCM and just replace the whole head unit with one of those Pioneers. They can be had for less than a grand if you look around.

Thanks Steph....Here's my fear, my local Porsche Dealer Svc Department told me this will void my warranty in the event of an electrical system failure....... Is that true??? The car is still under factory warranty and has an extended bumper to bumper through 2016 so I don't really want to mess with it too much....

I have not done the install myself on this car, but with most other cars, if you have the correct wiring adapter harness, the install is completely reversible. Crappy stereo shops usually will save cost by slicing into your speaker wires, so avoid those places.

The dealer can also claim the same thing if you add those aftermarket bluetooth/ipod integration modules. But they come with adapters so you can remove them before going to dealer should there be any problems.

By the way I think you also need a phone module in order to use the SIM card slot on the PCM head unit. I installed a Tooki and it works great, Dension will be your other bet. All are completely reversable.

And it doesn't hurt to have a good relationship with dealer's service advisor either...

I have had the Nav-Tv satellite radio unit and their "Tooki" bluetooth adapter in an '06 cab for four years. The units work OK and are integrated with the PCM, so the look is completely stock. Only a few bugs from time to time, always sporadic and always resolved by re-starting the system. Do be careful about the installation shop, however. I had seemingly unrelated electrical problems after the units were put in (the seat memory did not work), and they were eventually traced to the Sat unit installation.

I have a Dension gateway in my 2007 997S. Plugs into the CD changer port. My dealer installed it. Bluetooth, Ipod, plus RCA inputs for Sirius. Uses stock CD changer controls to navigate menus. It has ability to add modules for TV, back up camera, etc. It works well, the only issue is the user interface which is not very intuitive because you use the stock controls. Got it from bumperplugs.com here in charlotte.

YES, was just about to write, that's what I just bought from Eric yesterday at BumperPlugs.com and can't wait to get it.....

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...xperience.html

How many hours did the dealer charge you for install? Eric said it would be 2 hours and just for them to turn on the CD Changer (mine doesn't have one) which is like a 10 minute job....

Question, for the "SIRIUS" RCA Input, do you have to get an antenna mounted as well?
