break-in KILLING ME

car has 1000 miles after a month....actually been respecting the 4200 RPM break-in.....WHICH IS KILLING ME. In Sport its hard to keep it under 4200, plus I am not even getting into the power band yet. I usually drive the Benz cause the 997 is SUCH A PAIN IN THE *** In traffic............1000 miles to go till i can really air this thing out?!?!................are you new owners actually doin this or am I the only sap??

holler back and let me know

interesting,i was at my local dealer, test drove a 997s and when i was baout to give it a bootful,i asked..does it need running in,conscious of the 600 miles on the clock...'they come ready to drive,he said, claiming Porsche run them in.
Im sceptical about this and would appreciate any feedback.

All engines from Porsche and these types are run at the factory @ redline and are generally broken in. I drove all my 996's hard from day #1, the new M3 I am being a little more careful with as the engine is really built out and very tight. Remeber the ECU will always memorize your driving habits so if you dont drive hard it will not deliver the things you need when you want to. My last 2 cars my C55 AMG and my Company Jetta got the Italian redline out of the dealer break-in and they ran great!

Take a weekend run to Williams, AZ (Grand Canyon) and your break-in will be over. Your car will appreciate the long haul...road trips are fun.

Why do you find that the 997 is a PIA in traffic? Perhaps it is your technique...My secret is don't hang really close to the cars ahead with the goal of never stop rolling, and it works out pretty well

I've had mine for 40 days and have put 5,500 mi on the clock...it just gets better!

cause i drive a lazy-*** CL500 Sport daily. dont really have to do **** but front--ya dig?......nah its just a stick in LA sucks (in the day)........TRUNDLE: 5500 MILES-----DAMN babay boy, ---you are DRIVIN!............BD: nah man i have been over 5K RPM trust me..........just REALLY tryin to watch it. My dealer told me "just drive it" said stay under 6000 RPM, but read the manual it said 4200 until 2000 miles, so my scary *** is being timid.........................

The factory runs the engine on an engine dyno for a short time...30 minutes, and not at redline the whole time. This hardly qualifies as "break in".

break in your car how your going to drive it normally, if your gonna rag you car later then rag it now too. it should only take about 500 miles to break in all your seals and gaskets.

Same thing with Mercedes AMG. AMG engines come with a 1000 mile break in already on them. Yet it is the rest of the car- brakes etc. that need more time to break in. Therefore, you should stick to the break in rules imo. I'm sure that it wouldnt hurt the car to do anythign above especially not for a long time. but if you are constantly red lining it, burnouts, etc. then you will probably have problems. ya never know!
anyways- drive on!

ya...break in sucks...but I would rather wait it out then risk screwing up te engine. Also when I think about it, 2000 miles isnt that bad, it gives you time to get a feel for the car.

But, I heard that the Lambo's come broken in which is pretty sweet.

This is my 4th new 911. Each one has had the same recommended break in period of 2000 miles. Rightly or wrongly I have red lined the cars from day one and vary the rpm's in each gear to a fault during this period.
Never an issue, so far!
