Can anyone recommend an outdoor car cover? I am about to move. The new place has an attached private car port. I'll probably drive it on most weekends. I just want a car cover to keep it clean during the week. I read that some outdoor covers cause minor scratches. Are there ones that dont?

I have a porsche car cover for my boxster and I hate it. I might be in the minority but its a pain to put on and the zipper area has needed to be repaired several times from ripping. Now the clasp broke.

I would like to hear better alternatives also.

 

I bought the Silvergaurd outdoor cover from Suncoast. I worry that the covers trap any dirt and grind it down into the paint so I only use it after a wash if I'm not going to be using the car for a few days. If the cars clean I'll always do a waterless wash wipe down after a drive and before covering. It is nice to have the cover though. I have a decent car port so the car's not exposed to the sun much but the pollen and dust sitting on the cover after a few days is pretty incredible.

 

I second the negative vote on the Porsche outdoor cover (which I use indoors), for exactly the same reasons.

i'd second the weathershield. i have had 4 different types of cover. this one is best. it's light, easy to put on/off and can be washed in a clothes washer. it's completely water proof but soft.

 

Mine's an indoor cover. But California Car Covers made this custom one for me. Great cover. I can only imagine their outdoor stuff is top notch.

I like the plain 100% cotton cover to keep my P car from getting a sunburn.

 

I'm probably in the minority here, but I went for 2 covers.

A lot of the outdoor covers tend to be more abrasive than my liking. From speaking with reps at California Car Covers, Dupont Registry, and others, the outdoor covers omit the soft lining for weatherproof/breathability reasons (Don't shoot the messenger, it's as they told me. Personally, I'd point reasons more towards revenue).

Regardless, I love the interior covers that CCC and DP custom make. The interior lining is soft enough to not harm paint (I quickly wipe the car down w/ QD before putting the cover on). They're easy to put on, machine washable, and look friggin awesome. However, as bonehead's photo points out, they're not weatherproof - not even close. Therefore, I added an outdoor cover to go on top of the indoor cover to gain protection from the elements.

While not the ideal solution for most, it works for me. I'm in an "open garage" structure that gets protection from rain and direct sunlight. The covers help against debris carried in high-winds and constant fog/humidity here in SF.

 

I've been using the Kimberly Clark Evolution 4 covers on anumber fo vehicles, both indoors and out for years with great results. I just ordered one for my C2S and a 2nd for my 540I as they tend to degrade after 5-7 years being baked in the Carolina summers. Better the cover than my paint which still looks great...
