I taught my wife to drive a stick back in 1987 and she managed to put the car in first gear at 40 MPH. I didn't think it was possible. She's actually a very good driver with manual shift cars. She's had an S2000 and Mini Cooper. She is just afraid to drive my Porsche because I love it so much and she doesn't want to make a mark on it. However, if it did have PDK I think she'd be driving it now.
I'm not against the PDK I just think about how much absolute fun it is to master the manual transmission and drive it fast. I used to watch the drivers at the track flailing about in the car with the windshield wiper coming on and it cracked me up because driving a manual shift car is not easy. Then you'd get a guy with an M3 with SMG and it was like he was cheating. Just my opinion....(for the opinion police)

 

I had a PDK C4S for 3 years as a DD. I liked it but at times I found myself pining for my 6spd Carrera S. I blew hot and cold on PDK. It has it's + and -'s like everything else, well almost everything else

I now drive a GTS with a 6 spd manual. That tells you which I prefer. It's just the more involving trans and in my mind the classic sports car trans and what God intended the 911 to have.

If I was competitively racing now a days I would go to a paddle shift trans to gain every advantage I could since all / most pros are using F1 style transmissions. But...since I'm not racing competitively I just like playing Hurley Haywood or Steve McQueen on my local twisties and blipping the throttle and trying to master the "heel toe" thing.

 

When you are stuck in stop and go traffic, do you regret not having the PDK? I've daily driven my manual C2S for the last 4 years and it's getting pretty tedious being stuck in traffic and lugging between 1st and 2nd gears. For this reason alone, I'm favoring dual clutch transmission for my next whip.

 

Good points about launch control. I buy cars for fast 0-60, then never launch them.

I don't think a manual is so bad in occasional stop and go traffic. It gives you something to do at least. Unless the clutch is super heavy.

 

Continuios stop and go can be a negative w/ a mt. But for me the fun of the mt outweighs the negatives. To each his own.

Ok, selling the PDK. Manual is more fun . I'm also selling my golf clubs and going back to Persimmon woods, and balata golf *****. I'm also selling my tennis racquet and pulling the wooden one out the closet. There ya go.

Its all personal choice and I have no issue with people who choose PDK.

But your type of argument is meaningless.

The PDK has taken one part of a overall driving technique. Whether it is an important part of the driving technique to someone is a personal choice.

What you are describing is advances in tools of the particular games but the basic skills have not changed.

 

You need to sell that driver and get the new R11 TalorMade. It's the PDK of the Golf World brother.

Ok...this is how I feel about the matter: I'll take the 70" LED 3D TV, 7.1 Surround Sound, Overclocking the new Intel processor, Nike Air Soles, Light Weight High Tech Camping Gear, Sonicare toothbrush and titanium foot pegs for my CRF450R. I'll take all these new technologies and believe they bring great value. However, you cannot take the warmth of a tube amp and replace it with solid state circuitry, you cannot replace your wife's beautiful solid wood dinning room furniture with particle board made of laminated veneers and think it's the same, you cannot replace the lead singer of Journey with an Asian guy and still think the band is as good as Journey with Steve Perry, you can't take the butter out of French croissants and believe it's as good with margarine, you cannot grow Pinot grapes in Indiana and think it's going to be as good as the Pinot's grown in the Willamette Valley. Lastly, you sure the F*@) can't take the Porsche 911 put some paddle's on the steering wheel and believe it's still the quintessential red blooded manly sports car that I've grown to love over the last 25+ Years. I'll take the horse power, suspension upgrades, and every other refinement but don't take away my manual transmission. There are some things worth replacing but you can never tamper with anything already golden.

If Jesus bought a Porsche 911 he would buy it with a 6-speed manual transmission.

I love the 6MT in my 911, just as I love the remarkable MacBook Air I'm using to type this. Use of advanced technology isn't an all or nothing proposition - we can pick and choose where to use it.

But you, oh hallowed judge of what's meaningful and what isn't, go one to say in THOSE cases, the basic skills haven't changed. SO you therefore infer then that in the case of PDK and 6MT they must be drastically different. Hmmm..

 

It's great that we all have differing opinions on this matter, it's wonderful that we have the ability to make this choice.

My only request is that you not look down on someone for choosing one or the other.

 

IMO, best scenario is to have both, to be able to choose according to mood.
