looking for which Option
looking for which Option
Hello all
As this is my first post, I looking for some opinion on my first PCar.
I know some might be sick and tired of these "what to get" threads but i'm kinda stuck on my decision on what to get.
My current budget is around 140k and I'm contemplating whether to get a new 2012 GTS PDK or an older 997.1 turbo tiptronic.
the car will only be a weekend driver with occasional track (i have a Subaru WRX as a DD) and possible winter driving (when the roads are absolutely clear).
I test drove a 911 C2 PDK at downtown Porsche with sport chrono and find it amazing.
Also, I have a disability that I only have use of my left hand (don't worry, I have extensive drivers training and I went to ian law's car control school to safely be on the track) hence my auto transmission of choice. so basically that leaves 6-speed manual out of the equation.
Any insight is appreciated
Thanks

Couldn't go wrong with GTS and aero package. It would be my car of choice. Not a fan of the turbo lag, and I think you'd enjoy the smooth transition of power in a normally aspirated engine. Other option to consider, 2013 C2S. Nothing wrong with having the latest tech, and the model will be current for years to come.
I think it really depends on what kind of horse power you are used to and want. Our N/A engines are responsive, strong, and sound great, but there is no replacing the power of a Turbo motor. With your budget you can have a real super car Turbo if you are into that type of thing. You will never really have this in a N/A car.
I bet you can even pick up a 997.2 Turbo PDK with that budget.

Not to start a turbo vs N/A debate, but I would consider the following: First, you said the C2 was impressive. Well the GTS will have 63 more HP than the C2. (even better!) Second, you mentioned you may occasionally track it too. For most that hit the track, a good, smooth power band in a N/A car is desired to drive the car at it's limits. It allows you to "feel" the limits. A turbo car becomes more of a point and shoot car. Not that it isn't fun. Typical americanna has lived and breathed for drag racing from stop light to stop light. And a turbo 997.2 will do that with technology instead of displacement. Third, without having both hands on the wheel, correction of oversteer, while at a car's limits, can be difficult. A 997.2 TT can rapidly go from "at the chasis limits" while in a corner, to quickly oversteering upon laying down engine power. Fourth, the new 991 C2S will have 20 inch wheels, a more stable platform, and still have 400 HP!!
You will see a lot more GT3's at the track than the TT. And then again, you may have the only 991 at the track, for a while that is. Bottom line, you can't go wrong with either choice, but I would think a N/A car would suite you better. Just my 2 cents.

thanks for all the replies. It seems that the turbo may be a little too much to handle on a track with just one hand. The option of getting a turbo is because I don't want to do any mods (other than rims for the track) at all.
after driving the C2, it seems that the GTS' power is plenty.
I haven't seen any 10 / 11 997.2 Turbo PDK for sale in my area. that's why i'm looking at the 997.1 turbo tiptronic.

I have a GTS with PDK. It's six months old and I have 7 track days on it so far. I did a half dozen track days in my previous 997.2 S PDK as well. I've driven a student's 2011 turbo PDK for a few laps and did several laps two years ago at PSDS in Alabama in a turbo tip.
To me, the tiptronic would "tip" (sorry!) my hand in this decision. When I drove the tip there were a couple of different turns at Barber where the car just seemed to be hunting for the right gear and shifted midturn. Between the slow tip shift and the turbo engine, I found that very disconcerting. For me, that would be a deal breaker.
By contrast, the PDK (in sport plus) shifts more or less instantaneously and I've never felt a shift in mid-turn. I find the PDK to be a HUGE advance over the tiptronic, and I would choose a PDK over a tiptronic for that reason alone. As in -- I'd take a base Carrera PDK over a turbo tip. Throw a GTS into the equation and for me it's a no-brainer. OTOH, the power of the turbo PDK is simply amazing.
Given your physical issue I'd say PDK is the way to go. I think the GTS is a helluva car, so for me the choice is (and was) clear.
