No OE today would put an aluminized carbon system on a car and they could save a substantial amount of money doing it but they won't due to system life.

The mod to the OP's muffler may make 10 years as we have seen the odd outlier in studies done in the past. Certainly leaving a car outside in the winter is a plus. We found exhaust systems in Sweden, few garages, lasted longer than their counter parts in the US. Water and salts remain frozen outside where they will thaw and become a liquid inside thus promoting corrosion.

My point to all of this is to get it done right. Be knowledgeable on the way in and tell the shop what you want. Done right it will last every bit as long as the original system on the car. Hopefully someone reading this and contemplating the modification will use this information.

Good advice, might as well have them use Stainless. I hope I don't run into any problems with the 4" long, 2" diameter aluminized steel by pass tubes. Aluminized steel exhaust systems uniformly come with 12 year warranties, so based on that and the reasons I stated earlier, I hope mine will be OK for at least 12 years... Bud has been in busines since 1955, I'll have to pick his brain on it for my sake.

I wouldn't worry about it. What is the worst case scenario? In a few years shorter than anticipated, the by-pass connection either has corrosion, or the welds "unzip' themselves. Now, you will have the 2ndary muffler delete!! Really not a big deal. I would bet your muffler guy could easily fix that when/if it ever happens anyway. I would like to see if anyone has more information on what OEM material is used for the model years, as it would be nice to match it if possible. I am wanting the "Gundo" badly for my '09 C2S, but, I also am considering the sharkwerks by-pass with it (could be too loud). So I am not sure if a by-passed primary muffler car should go 1.75 diameter or 2. I would love to hear a "gundo" 997.2, but it is unlikely. Enjoy your new sound Don. It is the only thing I don't like about my car. Are there any "Gundo guys" out there that regret it?? If so, why?? Any with a primary by-pass too??

If you are think about changing out the exhaust anyway, why not spend a couple hundred bucks just to see if you like the Gundo? I think a bypass would be much louder.

Porsche has been using a 300 series stainless for a while now on their cars. Take a magnet and put it on the bottom of the muffler. Don't do it in a severely formed area. If the magnet does not stick it is a 300 series. The reason for not using a severely formed area is that a 304 may form some transformation martensite in those areas and it is magnetic. You can do that same little experiment on your sink. If it is a cheap one with a shallow draw you will most likely find more of an attraction in the corners. Cheap sinks are made from 301 better ones 304 and some top of the line from 316.

To the OP, hopefully you will be one of the outliers that gets by. If not it would be a simple fix as noted. Take a look at it once a year while doing an oil change. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

If you think aluminized carbon steel is a 10-12 year product please take a look at this article. I worked with the author for 10 years on projects for exhaust materials selection for the major OEMs.

Contact Darin at FD Motorsports, 925-765-5703. He can talk to you about maybe doing a core exchange. He has several cans on the shelf ready to ship out. His shop is a stones throw from mine.

He can ship you out the new cans, you send back your old ones for him to keep and mod. We did that on mine. He took my cans off and put on a set he had on the shelf. They looked great and didn't look abused or damaged. He offers different colors if you want them painted.

I also got a set of ceramic coated black tips added on for $ 60.00. Darin will take care of you!!
