Porsche Gen.2 PSE sportexhaust
Porsche Gen.2 PSE sportexhaust
Hi
I am interested to install a genuine Porsche 997 Sportexhaust (PSE) on my Carrera 3.6 2009 and wonder if someone has done this and if there is a DIY on internet?
Is it difficult?
Regards
Joacim

Do you just want the mufflers or the whole deal with functional valves? If you want the latter, it is not a DIY project unless you are very skilled. You have to pull out your interior to run the wires from the rear bottom of the car to the center console. Also, programming via PIWIS is necessary to get the switches to function appropriately. The quoted time for installation is about 10-12 hours.
I recently had it done in my car.

10-12 hours? Hua....sounds expensive

Although it would be nice to have the on/off option, I wouldn't necessarily consider not installing it a drawback as you would want it on most of the times. You are talking about several additional hrs of labor and to me it's not worth it on a retrofit. Use that cash for tires, PSDS, DE/DS etc.

I have the PSE in my 997.2 C2S. Agree that once u have it you will want it on most (if not all) the time. The deeper tones are pretty awesome. The only time I actually want to turn it off is when I'm manouvering down to our basement carpark as it can get quite noisy.
Yes and Yes
I had the PSE installed on my 09' 3.6 last year.
1) I have the 29 pg. equipment "installation and conversion instructions". A dealer mechanic emailed it to me. Not b/c I wanted to do it myself, but rather to see what Porsche quotes for time: 600 Time Units. (I believe 100 TU = 1 hour). There are dealers taking (or billing) 10+ hours to install the PSE and that is simply because they are slow (since this isn't something done everyday). Its a big job - remove rear deck lid inside the car and run new vacuum lines in the engine bay etc.. Not a DIY at all IF....you do the full install w/dash switch (which I did)
2) I ignored my service advisor who said don't do the switch. There are times when I really like the car sounding totally innocuous. BUT, the real reason I insisted on the switch was b/c our bedroom is over the garage. I simply did not know that with PSE the baffles are open on start up for a few seconds then close. So, having the switch to preserve quiet departure in the morning from the garage - didn't work...
3) The car is not obnoxious or even loud really with the PSE on. If I had it to do all over again, I'd save the labor $$ and just have the sport exhaust open all the time (or check out a Tubi).
I can email or fax you the install instructions. Let me know if you have any more questions. I put a heated multifunction wheel in my car....that was a headache! But like the PSE it makes the car better on a daily basis.
Good luck

the sound difference is not huge. therefore having the switch is pointless imo. i have it in my C2S. every time i get into the car the first thing is switching the PSE on. i would hope it's automatically on so i don't have to switch it on every time. it's not loud at all. i wouldn't bother for the switch.
Based on what I've heard said, I'd see about having solid toggle switch mounted in the engine bay so you can still switch it if you really need to for the odd occasion.
The only benefit the in-dash switch probably provides is Porsche can be compliant with some market specific noise ordinances, and adding one also may improve the resale value (as a fully installed PSE may command a bit more than an installation without the full factory OEM treatment. But resale value never really enters my mind when adding customizations to the car as delivered.

Exactly.
This is what I did on my 2008 997.1s and I was very happy with it. While I absolutey preferred the PSE to be "on", there were occassions where I left the house early or came home late and preferred to not bother my neighbors, or more importantly... my better half.
The Carnewal solution is an excellent one and he's a super cool guy to boot.

Christian, I have a hard time believing that going easy on the throttle (rather than using the switch) won't be adequate on those occasions where you don't want to attract any unwanted attention or wake up your neighborhood.
