which engines have had more issues with IMS

has it been the 3.6's or the 3.8's? and has the problem been limited to 2005 model year?

Just curious.. is that speculation, or do you have data to back that up?

I've been told that the 996 motors were much more prone to IMS failures, and that Porsche fixed problem with the later (DFI) motors. That came from my service writer, and a fella I met who spent $18K putting a new (rebuilt) motor in his 996 after he fell victim.

I'm voting for speculation. I've moved to three states in the last four years and have had conversations with indy mechanics and service managers on this topic and I've heard from each that they've seen very few of these. The one specific case that I heard from my indy mechanic in Virginia was on an '06 C2S, so who knows...

Of course no one has any exact data except Porsche.

But as someone who has had their engine replaced due to IMS (05, 997, non-s)) and spoke at length and reviewed the subject with dealers, techs, indies and PCNA people while it was getting changed I have my views and opinions on the subject.

While mine was getting done there were two others in the dealers also getting new engines for IMS. One was for an 04 (996) and one was for an 06. (997, non-S) I guess the few examples just happened to be all at my dealer.

Yes, the DFI engine is not prone to IMS since it doesn't have one. Didn't realize I needed to point this out.

There is a poll over at rennlist, majority of them seems to be 2005 models.

Agreed 2005 997. That is why I went with an 09. Only Porsche knows for sure, and it should have been a recall IMO. They are lucky to have such loyal customers who always want the next version. If anything, the cost should've been shared by Porsche, as a gesture of goodwill.

Despite whatever the final percentage affected actually is, I agree that Porsche should goodwill these when they do occur, absent some indication of mistreatment of the engine. Given the number of cars of lesser caliber that I've driven in my life well beyond 100k miles, I can't imagine why they wouldn't.
