UPDATE: Alright, drove the Porsche to work today, (32 mile commute) and all is well. No oil burning (white smoke) on start up, and great cranking power from the starter!

I am concerned; as I still have an intermittent squeal on start up, it would seem only while cold. I associated this with a bad AOS, and it has only happened once, so I am hoping this is from left over oil from the old AOS. I'll see if it continues in the coming days. If it does, I will assume I have a failing accessory or something else going on.

Does the squeal is more of a low tone or high pitch tone? high pitch= serpentine belt, low pitch= starter bendix spring not retracting fast enough.

it's somewhat medium actually, but given when and how it happens, I'm almost positive it's the starter.

You have any info on the bendix spring issue? I had an inkling that the starter was basically being raped by the engine turning over and the starter not disengaging.

The drive belt I replaced with the AOS install, since I have no idea if it has ever been replaced on my used car. I checked the alignment/wear of the pulleys as well, and all seemed fine. I don't suspect the mini V drive belt.

most likely is your bendix... I don't know if they have just the bendix but the solution is to replace your starter. it sucks because you were right "there" changing the cable...

Equinox. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your thread. I also have a 2006 S and Luckily My CPO is still good, BUT at some point I am going to be in Garage cussing and turning wrenches. Rep Points for you!

Lol, thanks man.

So yeah, I searched the problem, and found the best way to describe the problem. As someone else put it, it's like a "Kazoo sound on start up." Lol

Unfortunately, this makes me realize that my alternator/starter cable may have failed not due to bad design, but because the amps that the starter pulls when it's fighting the engine on start up, not disengaging. This is probably what caused the cable failure, and I need to repair this weekend before it ruins another cable.

Also, I updated the AOS / Alternator Cable tutorial with better explanations, and added links to my future mod list on the first page.

To buy or not to buy?

Techart "Racing" Exhaust (muffler) system
http://www.ebay.com/itm/TechArt-RACI...item45fb62fc2b

I was set on Fabspeed due to quality and price, but apparently these Techart systems are super discounted because the store is clearing Techart inventory as they are switching brands. Anyone know if the "Racing" exhaust is real loud, or have a video? I'm worried about in cabin drone.

$1100 for some mufflers! Walk away, won't make any power.

Lol, well reason I ask is because the Fabspeed exhaust (mufflers) is $1,295, and Tubi Style (mufflers) is $2,550. So 1,100 for Techart seems pretty fair, as they are on par with Tubi. You saying exhausts in general cost too much for no power? On a rear engine car, mufflers are considered cat-back exhausts.

Change your headers and cats, and you will see some small gains. Mufflers alone, no gains.

My GT3 was on a Dyno, the ran some base line tests, then swapped the exhaust for a complete system from a cup car, and the gains were 17hp. Spend the $1100 on a LWFW or a set of cats, and you will be further ahead.

Equinox,

Thanks for the excellent write-up on how to change the Alternator cable.

One question: Do you have to remove the AOS to access the starter cable or can you leave it in place and still perform the cable replacement?

Thanks
Yves

Is it just me or do the Tech Art cans look like stamped steel mass-produced stuff? No way I'd pay the cash just for that name plate welded on the side...
