Can a radar detector be plugged into our Cig lighter? Manual says no?
Can a radar detector be plugged into our Cig lighter? Manual says no?
Hi guys, I am looking at getting either a V1 or Escort 9500xi <leaning towards the 9500 because of the reduction in false alarms>. Unfortunately, the only 12v plug I can find is in my center dash next to brake <the lighter>. On a whim I looked in the manual and it said do NOT plug in electrical devices into the cig lighter? Where exactly do you guys WITHOUT hardwired systems plug in your detectors <or anything else electronic>?

Thanks!

Thanks!
I have my V1 plugged into the outlet on the center console on the passenger's side - like Domer 911. I have a coupé, so it exists in these cars too. Never had an issue and it has been 6 years since I'm using it already.
Ha! That's why I love this board. I just went outside and looked, and sure enough there is a 12v plug on the right side of the center console up underneath on the passenger side. Tough to see if I didn't know where to look.
Thanks!!!
I think the only reason they say don't plug in you radar detector is because it is unswitched so that when the key is out of the ignition the detector is still on and drains the battery. I think it is unswitched so you can use a battery tender.
For this reason I never use the cig plug because I can remember to swtich the detector off and its why I hardwired using an "add-a-circuit" fuse in the fuse box and wired it up to the mirror. http://www.sparepartsnmore.com/repla...rcuit-kit.html
it was a peice of cake with my V1 and it took about 30 minutes to do it. The process I used was amost exactly how it was done at this site. http://www.teamspeed.com/forums/991-...smartcord.html
I love the setup (though I used a different fuse location) and has worked perfectly since I did it a year ago. The best part is it is completely reversible. Also, when I have my detector in my other cars I just tuck the wire away so its not just hanging there. Good luck in what ever you do

I got a ticket three years ago in my Gallardo because I was talking with my son and had failed to turn it back on. It only works if it's on! The V1 does not filter false signals as well, but is easily muted by depressing the volume ****.
Just my unsolicited $.02
Once you try the arrows V1, you will never like another. Knowing what direction the signal(s) is coming from is just as critical. I have run multiple units in different vehicles and the V1 is the most useful. If its behind or to the side of me, keep "movin".

Thanks for the suggestions ^^^. For me the biggest thing other then actually alerting me to a threat is NOT alerting me to non-threats. Something the V1 seems not able to do. I've read 8 different shootouts today and it seems the other guys have caught up to the V1 in terms of range detection.
The biggest difference is in false signals. One review pitted the Beltronics gx65 against the v1 on a 85 mile trip. The V1 alerted 130 times, 6 of which were cops. The GX65 alerted 8x and picked up the same 6 cops. <They had them mounted in the same car>. That's incredible to me. The ability of the 9500 and GX65 to store and discount false signals that I would drive by every day is HUGE for me. I don't want to listen to it squawking if it's not a real threat, and I certainly don't want to hear or see it going off by shopping centers. I wish the V1 could do this, I would buy it in a second.
