It's a 6 physical gears, the 7th is just an electronic overdrive of the 6th.

Pdk is 7 gears. The manual is a testament to this. The new 7speed manual gearbox is based on the pdk gearbox.
Not sure if the durametric has it but when the dealer connected the piwis and went to the pdk module and there was a number that has indes of 33 for mine. I think it shoukd be the software part number.

Let me try to get it from dealer. I now have some difficulty going in because of new rules of no piwis connection without a job order. But i think the major upgrade to the 991 pdk was the software. With recent dealer upgrade 997 pdk is as good as 991 except for coasting, vectoring, start stop ability, nuetral feature, all of which i am happy not to have because i think it belongs on a luxury car not a sports car.

I have read a couple of articles that state 997.2 PDK has only 6 gears, this is one of them:

http://m.teamspeed.com/forums/showth...359&styleid=74

... While there are 7 gears, in practice its only really 6 since seventh gear is really an overdrive that engages in normal mode at around 80kmh ...

I considered trading my 997.2 for a 991 but didn't like the electric steering and some other things so I decided to hold out as I knew it was just a matter of time before some aftermarket company would address it.

Looking across the web I came across a Florida company known as 1016 Industures. They do software tunes and are well received for their R8 R-Tronic software.

I contacted them and inquired if they had one for the 997.2 PDK. They in fact did. I bought the software and loaded it. Very easy install, software comes on a writer that is plugged into the OBDII port. Took about 5 min.

All I can say is WOW. The software completely transformed the car. 1016 Industries (Peter) states shifts are 19% faster and it definitely is. Upshifts/downshifts are much faster, crisp and aggressive. Overall the update has made the car more immediate and importantly satisfying to drive. The delay bw pulling the paddle and the car shifting has been minimized

Still not as 991 fast but a huge improvement nonetheless. Shifts are fast but also have some feel to them. They don't feel so sanitized as the 991.

Definitely keeping the 997.2 for some time. Been enjoying it a lot lately and really look forward to driving it every chance I get. Couldn't say the same before the PDK update.

Here is video of the car after the software was loaded. Car is in Sport Plus mode:

How many miles have you put on the tune so far? Any downsides? I'm thinking about doing this, but I don't want to open myself up to any PDK issues further down the road.

What a crock! Can't believe everything you read especially on the net. After reading this, I took my 09 PDK cab for a spirited drive. I could feel the 6 to 7th gear change as well as the 7 to 6th downshift. Overdrive yes but a gear in its own right.

Agreed. Looks like a gear to me.

Excellent! The rendering clearly show 6 and 7Th at opposite ends. Hope that clears this topic for good.

Yep, it certainly is a gear as VinceC points out with the Car and Driver link. I have read what Mbuenros is referring to on teamspeed and I can see the room for the incorrect interpretation. What the writer was trying to say there is that only 1-6 is useful as the real gears in sporty driving (as a matter a fact the car reaches top speed in 6th gear and Sport Plus even blocks 7th), 7th is just thrown in to improve fleet gas mileage and to get that higher MPG number on the window sticker.
