Need Advice

Hello all. Sorry for the typical advice thread. I am looking at buying a 911 Carrera S. This would be my first Porsche. Are there any issues with the car that I should look for? I have found one at a dealer it is a 2009 with 24,000 miles on it. here are some of the options it has leather, PDK, bluetooth, heated/ ventilated seats, sport chrono package, extended nav mod-pcm 3.0, bose, self dimming mirrors, power seats, turbo wheels, multi-function steering wheel. The car is a CPO It just had the 3yr service front brakes and rotors, spark plugs, oil and front tires. All service has been performed by this dealer since it was new. I can get it for 72k + TTT. What is your opinion on this? The only thing it doesn't have is the limited slip diff. I don't plan on tracking the car, but I do some spirited driving and I may have it tuned. I look foward to your responses. Once again thanks for the time and patience.

2009 CPO car is a safest bet for you right now. pdk + sport chrono and Nav is pretty much as good as it gets. look at cars.com for similar cars to establish price range, imho such cars go from lower $60K into upper $70K depending of location.
If dealer wants $72K it is probably realistic, go to cars.com, pring list of similar cars with similar milage, i would offer $65K and then negotiated a bit up, $67-68K is probably a realistic price, it depends of how bad they want to sell that 997.2 car.

all in all it is a best thing to buy right now imho price wise - clean 997.2 car with CPO and under 25K miles, and options set is good.

for limited slip car had to have SPASM option, but it is not critical for you unless you want to track it. I am also not sure if PDK cars even had LSD ever, but it is easy enought to check.

Thanks for the response. The dealer originally wanted 76k for the car. I will check out cars.com.

sounds solid.... one thing I don't understand, is a car having less than 25,000 miles and already replaced the rotors and brakes... my old 996 had 87,000 miles when I replaced the original rotors and my 997 has 67,000 miles with original rotors and pads...

I have one other question. Does the 997 have any oil consumption issues or would this be normal?

I agree, it could suggest the car had been at the track often. just and opinion.

Hi I bought my 09 C4S convertible CPO car a few months ago and I can tell you what I did. Dealers always start high...really high. I had my dealer print off the exact Porsche options the car had. Then I went and plugged them into Edmunds and Kelly blue book. When I did that I found the dealer had my car listed at the very top of both of those. I came back and offered an average seller to seller cost for the car <hint: both kelly and edmunds give you a detailed breakdown of what the car is worth with/without cpo and it's given condition>. Of course I hit them right at the end of the year when the new 991 was announced so I'm not sure if that helped. They had my car listed for $89,999 which they said was already discounted from $91,999. Msrp was $124,999 on my car in 09. I came back at $85k even and they took it especially when my salesman knew I had done my homework. My car had 5700 miles and is COP'ed until Feb 2 2016

Bottom line, don't guess what the car is worth. Find out ahead of time.

a couple thoughts...

If you like the car, and you aren't in love with "the chase," of looking at cars all over the place, a Porsche certified car is a great way to go, and worth a bit extra, I think. I bought my 2009 S Cab from my dealer in early 2010, and with CPO, had a total of almost 7 years of warranty. And while the car has been solid, it is convenient to take it in for rattles and other annoyances without the worry of spending a fortune. That said, I also agree that going through the listings in autotrader, cars.com, and dupont registry will inform you of approximately where the market is, and what, if anything, extra you might be paying for the convenience and peace of mind of walking into your dealer tomorrow and buying this car.

Best of luck on an enjoyable purchase!

tim

There's usually room to negotiate. Depending on your part of the country the price might be a bit high. I traded my similar 6 speed 09 C2S for my GTS. The dealer gave me $65k on the trade. They discounted the GTS about $15k.

Thanks for the tips. I have done my research. They are willing to let it go at the private party price on edmunds plus the car is CPO. The warranty will be good to 2015/100k. From my research this seems to be the going price down here in the south. Still not a done deal I think I will look around some more. They have had this car for at least 4 months on the lot.

OP - Even with it being CPO from a dealer, I'd pay $250 to have a third party do a pre-purchase inspection (paint meter, strut mounts, etc.) Otherwise seems fine to me. Spark plugs at 24k is also a bit unusual but not a big deal - just ask them why and see what they say.

Also what state are you in? I'd be a lot more inclined to buy a 24k mile car in the Sun Belt than I would the Northeast, especially if the car was driven around a major city... Check the NAV memory for recent locations!

I was noticing on my car the cpo warranty was adding over 4k to the price with all the same options on kelly and Edmunds. Interesting since the CPO warranty itself only costs about $2400 at the dealer. To me, the CPO is the biggest selling point. It doesn't mean something isn't going to go wrong, but as mentioned above you can be nickel and dimed to death with little things without it.

Good luck!

I am in Florida. The car was bought and owned down here. The only problem I have is I don't know of a good independent shop down here to bring it to. From what I can see it appears to be in excellent shape. I will check the nav unit to see where it has been. That is a very good idea never thought about that.
