Is the 997 threatened by the 2012 Audi TT and Nissan 370ZX ?
Folks,
I don't know about you, but after reading the test drives of the new 2012 Audi TT and Nissan 370ZX, it seems to me that the 997.1/2 is severely attacked with cars worth half the price of the Porsche.
The Nissan looks a lot like the 997 from behind and offers spectacular performances and the Audi TT has all the features of the 997 (including the Sport mode) and power at half the price.
Competition is fierce.....to say the least.

I had a 2006 C4S, currently have a boxster Spyder and my wife has a TTS. In my opinion, no need to worry! The TTS is numb and the Stronic tranny is dumb. Whenever I am in the Audi TTS, I am cussing that Dual Clutch transmission! Exhaust note is a cute little burp and I cannot get in a comfortable seating position for the life of me. The Spyder, is raw, piercing exhaust note above 6k rpm and you feel as though you are part of the driving experience of the car!
In my opinion, even though there may be alot of great cars coming to market, it really is all in what you want. Driving these cars side by side and you might just realize there is "No substitute". Ugh, can't believe I just put that in writing!

IMO other 'fierce competition' would be the new NSX and the Lotus line-up (Esprit and Elan, especially) and perhaps even the new Cayman coming out.
There ARE intagibles to driving a Porsche (I'm presuming that's why we're on this forum to begin with)... but there are also very good reasons why Porsche is one of the world's most profitable car companies. Best bang for your buck isn't one of company's core values, that's for sure.
Good stuff!
It's great that such cars are rolling out.... it will only mean better things for car enthusiasts and the consumer. Nothing better for those wanting the best Porsche in the 991 to happen then the Nissan GTR... It came on the scene and took a bold stand.... with Porsche in their scope as a measuring stick (the turbo) it set off some of the most fierce debates we have seen and think what helped us see the 991 you see today possibly.
Its not just the TT and the Nissan .... Ford and Chevy want in.....
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...an-muscle.html similar thread of cars released for a great value with some amazing power and performance numbers!
Its an exciting time in the auto space.... I for one could care less if a car is a nissan or a VW or a Porsche or a Ferrari... I am as excited for the Nissan NSX to come out as I am the new Viper! Jaguar back in the mix, Ford and Chevy in a horse power battle. All good stuff!

I test drove an Audi TT, but I cant remember a thing about it... Enough said!
I test drove a 370z, and I remember liking it a lot. The styling isn't my cup of tea though. The interior felt like being in a video game, lots of lights, blinking and changing colors. And those three gauges on the dash are ridiculous. The 997's sports-chrono timer is kind of silly too, but at least it serves a purpose. The blind spots in the 370z is horrible. Lastly the drive felt good, not great.
If price/performance ratio was a major concern I would have gotten a Cayman S. A Cayman is 90% of the performance of a 997 at 66% of the cost. Throw in my mediocre driving skills and a Cayman is 110% of a 997s performance. haha =]
I bought a 911 bc it scared the pants off of me. Coincidentally, I keep my wallet in my pants... I probably could have saved myself some money and tried a 993 first. O well.

I just purchased a CPO '09 997.2 C2. The only other car I was considering was a new 2012 Audi TTRS. However living in LA, I simply was not interested in a 6 speed MT, and was in love with the PDK on the C2. The Audi TT in the basic 2L, and in the S form is not even in the same league as a 997.2 C2. Now, if Audi is smart, they'll bring the Tiptronic version of the TTRS to the United States for CY13, and in Cabrio form, will offer a significant cost savings over a 997. However, I wasn't willing to wait, and I'm thrilled with my decision. Sorry Audi, still love my wife's '10 Q5, but the P car wins my sports car choice.
I had a Audi TT on a 3 year lease. It was a V6 Quattro S-tonic with all the bells and whistles. I got so sick of it after just 2 yeats, I bought my way out of the lease. Comparable to a 911? Are you kidding me? I've had 4 911s and would never consider another TT.
