997 Over Revs from DME

Just did a flash from Softronic and loaded the Durametric software and looked at what's been going on with the engine.

Here is what I got from the DME download;

Range 1 2744 / 680.9h
Range 2 574 / 680.9h
Range 3 85 / 680.9h
Range 4 1 / 680.9h
Range 5 0 / 0h
Range 6 0 / 0h
Operating hours counter 687.3

Here are the stats;

07 997.1 C4S - Purchased 01-11 with 18k miles on it, now has 26k on it.

I know there is a calculation for figuring out the actual time the engine was at a particular range, so looking at that...I don't think it's too bad.

I will admit that I know that I have hit the limiter when I first got the car...feeling it out!! I did not get a DME report before purchase because I was a newbie and really didn't know better. The previous owner was an "older" gentlemen and I doubt he was driving as hard as I do.

I'm sure some may say going into Range 4 is not good but I'm open to what anyone has to say about the stats and what they can potentially mean for possible resell in the future.

I don't think I abuse my car but I do enjoy running the car through it's paces and have the Porsche experience when ever possible!!

The over revs occurred only 7hrs ago so they are yours...at 7k rpm there are about 350 ignitions per second....the type three and four are of such small duration (fraction of a second) that they may not have done any damage but they will hurt you when you go to sell....you dont have enough hours since the event to determine if you did any damage or not

Also, without having an earlier reading you don't how many over revs occurred prior to hour 680.9 only that the last occurrence was at hour 680.9. You could have had 2700 range over revs pre hour 680.9 and 44 at hour 680.9 - you just don't know.

He does know that the type 3 and 4 occurred at 680.9 and those are the ones that count....if the car was newer they could void your warranty

At what RPM will a Range 4 register in the DME? At redline at 7K or what RPM past redline? Can someone tell us how the Ranges translate into actual RPM's?

Range 1-RPM Range 7,300-7,500
Range 2-RPM Range 7,500-7,700
Range 3-RPM Range 7,700-7,900

It is possible that your rev-limiter was raise to 7500rpm or above and the inertia of your engine bumping into the limiter allows it to record up to a range 4.

My rev-limiter was raised to 7500rpm and I intentionally tested it by bumping into rev-limiter twice and has logged over-rev in ranges 1-3 both times.

Check with Softronic or the vendor that you got your tune from to see what they set the rev-limiter at, its possible that yours is above 7500rpm since mine only log range 1-3 but not 1-4 like yours (eventhough you just have 1 ignition cycle in Range 4)

The "Reading the DME" link is a good one and I have read others that mirror the info in that post. I have also read posts that suggest not only that level 3 's aren't an issue but that any number of ignitions less than 10 are statistically irrelevant because the time period involved is so small, making the level 4 over revs a non-event most probably caused by hitting the rev limiterif they happened at all.

People worry too much about over revs. Until I see someone report an engine failure and warranty denial because of over revs (not that it hasn't happened or won't happen, just haven't seen anyone report it) I choose not to be concerned. I bought a used TT with overrevs - dealer CPO'd it, it runs strong, no noise, no oil consumption, no leaks - I'm OK with the overrevs.

Ding Ding Ding!!!!!

Finally others are saying the same thing!

Too much attention is paid to a DME scan when buying a used Porsche. These cars are meant to be driven hard!!! I would be more afraid of a garage queen then a car that was used the way it was meant to be used.

I know for a fact that I hit the rev limiter hard at least once...I was racing a motorcycle from a dead stop at a light and hit the limiter when I looked back to see where he was and forgot to shift...DUH.

I'm not going to put too much into this over rev stuff..it's a conversation piece and if we didn't have the ability to see it...we wouldn't be talking about it!! I knew there are some real hard core P fans that are by the book in an **** way...but you know what...you can tell everything about a used car by talking to the previous owner and looking at how he treats the car. I doubt I would have a hard time selling this car if I was getting rid of it...but since I'm not....it really doesn't matter now does it!!!
