Why use a muffler...
After looking at all of these threads on the gundo Hack, it looks to me that all that we do there is short circuit the muffler. So I have to ask the question, why not just eliminate the muffler completely or does it function as some sort of Resonator. I ask the question because you could just get rid of that weight. Thoughts?

Thanks guys...so it sounds like even though the Gundo hack is a bypass, the muffler still does attenuate the sound....I would love to understand the science with that.

Mufflers don't control the emissions, that is what the Cats are for. Mufflers muffle the sound, or some would say tune the sound that comes out of the car's engine.
Looking at the PO's signature he has a Gen 2 997. So it is possible to eliminate the rear muffler with a Sharkwerks rear muffler bypass kit. It appears that most who have done this are happy with the results.

think of the muffler as a flute.. and covering the various holes in the flute results in different sounds.. and u'll get the idea.
if u just want better sound.. and don't want to switch out the muffler.. (and do not care to pass emission
..) then just get straight pipes to bypass the cat. It will sound loud & great and u will get more hp.
I have a C4S with the Sharkwerks center muffler bypass and did a side by side revving with the O.P and his C4S last year and others in the audience could hear the difference. Two thumbs up. Saved the OEM center muffler for whenever.
