Tire replacement ~ Where do you guys go?

I'm curious where you guys go to replace your tires. I'm debating going to a National chain... just something about those clowns making a mess of things isn't too appealing.

Tirerack has a set of rears on sale for 440, which a local distributor (Discount Tire) matched. However, I've seen these guys work before, busting things up is a daily occurrence.

So I'm curious where you guys go?

My Porsche dealer will beat tire rack prices for N rated tires. Plus they don't charge you the shipping. Install is $40.00 a tire.

I used to go to a specialized wheel shop as they are more careful with your wheels but my local tire shop (Woody's Wheel Works) didn't have a machine that can fit 325 wide tires so I took my chances at Discount tires. I told them specifically that my wheels has no scratches, curb rashes, etc. and that they were very expensive. They had a more experience guy wrap my tires, and I saw them put rubber protectors (not sure what they are called) to protect my wheels from scratches. I watched the whole process, he was extremely careful. I was kinda scared for a minute, watching the other bozo's toss and throw things around.

I'm lucky. Forgeline is about a 45 minute drive from my house.

I developed a great relationship with my local Big O Tire guy. He is very careful with my car and understands the cost involved. You have to be careful though. You have to be kind of a jerk but if you are not those guys that work there that will never get a Porsche won't care. Sad but true.

I have 325's on the rear's as well. I'll just watch over them like a hawk. I have bought tires at Discount before and know the service manager somewhat. I'll make sure he does the job.

^ that is a good idea, but dealer has to be compliant/agree to do that...most (in my experience) will only do tire install if you buy from them as well

I ended up doing it at Discount, the guys were super cool. Let me stand inside and watch, while another manager stood by and watched as well to make sure everything was up to par. They put their most experienced guy on it, he did a decent job. I flipped him a 20. But I was nervous the entire time, especially since Techart's aren't cheap.

I use Discount Tire also. I've gotten to know the manager there well enough with all the times I went in when I got my wheels... They've been careful with the rims each time they've had to pull off a tire or remount one. I did hang around the car while the work was done - no lounging inside unless I can see everything!

Yeah, similar thing happened here. I told him I wasn't to comfortable with letting them work on the car. I had a last minute change of heart and told him I'd rather take it to my dealer. He reassured me that he'd make sure his best guy is on and I'd be able to watch everything. So he setup my appointment at 6, which was closing, I didn't even realize this. So I got there a few after 6 and it was just the mechanic and service manager. Everyone else was gone, I pulled in my car myself, stood inside and talked with the mechanic and service manager the entire time. Watching like a hawk.

The manager is a really nice guy, he's done my Toyota (Daily driver) and remember the Toyota quite well. So I can't complain, but as you guys mentioned, I'm sure if I just dropped off my car there would be 30+ miles and a scratched rim.

Scoper, what are you running? I just switched over to Conti's from Pirelli's. I have to say, the tread pattern on the Conti's is very agressive and abrasive. Much more than the Pirelli. I was told that it would out perform the Michelin, maybe it will maybe it won't but I won't overpay for the name.

Discount tire. They will also match the discounttiredirect.com web price. I've always been pleased.

Discount on the last set. They have the best installed prices around here and I, like Ynot, look at each wheel and show the manager scratch-free wheels. That's what they do for a living.

I never buy from the rack anymore since what matters is the tires installed. The local chain store has enough volume to handle all types of wheels including the pricey ones popular with this crowd.

Theymorice match and even with sales tax the delta is overshadowed by local benefits like free puncture repair and onsite warranty. Shipping tires back to Indiana is a pain for a west coaster.
