To Double din or not
To Double din or not
Ok so i been looking at options to upgrade this pcm 2.1 with bluetooth and ipod so i looked at the options beeing Mobridge and Dension and keeping the stock radio , but now i see the latesd double din from Pioneer and Kenwood wich come with all the wistles and bells and they have a instalation kit im just not sure i want to mess with the stock look your opinions are greatly aprreciated .
DO IT!!!!
I put in a kenwood double din the first week I had my car. Best mod I have done to date. Touchscreen with Remote, Blutooth, Garmin Nav w/traffic, DVD player, Sirius & XM, ipod connection (video too)!! Why wouldn't you?
I think it looks way better then stock and although you may think DVD in a p-car, my kids love it!!
I don't remember who it is but there is a double din porsche installation kit for sale on ebay with Porsche on the bezel. Actually it's the same kit as in the picture above.
Simply can't say enough about this upgrade.

How can I forget the rear cam... it's amazing!! There's also a way you can turn it on when your driving fun for the passengers.
And if you have Bose and you use the interface module (in order to keep the stock amp and not have to rewire) you lose the ability to control the speaker front/rear volume (i.e. fade function) from the new stereo head unit.
I have thought long and hard about upgrading to a Pioneer AVIC, but ended up staying with the stock PCM due to not wanting to lose many of the car's functions controlled through the PCM. And plus, I've already spend the money on a set of Kinesis f110's

I did it, and am very happy. I replaced the DVD for the old nav system with a small digital amp. Replaced the speakers in the door and the tweeters with Audison speakers, and added a sub in the Bose location in the back. It all looks factory - amp and crossovers fit where the old DVD and amp was in the trunk, and everything is clean.
I was very much on the fence about this. Hated the stock sound (had the base stereo not Bose) but didn't want to lose PCM and wasn't sure about going aftermarket. But the pros outweigh the cons. You lose the graph for sport chrono (which I NEVER used), and you lose the ability to quickly turn daytime running lights on and off. Not a big deal. Sound is great, and I was careful to wire things in a way that will allow me to go back to stock if I want to one day. (But I doubt I ever would)

I just had a Pioneer AVIC installed. I have Bose so it takes a special fiber optics harness, but it's so worth it. Worlds better than the OEM head unit. It looks OEM, especially with the Porsche logo splash screen that comes up when I start the car. I'll post pictures when I can.

Glad to see this thread, I have been debating for the last week on this exact topic. I have Bose & sport Chrono & don't use any of the PCM stuff, only the sport button =)
So for me back-up camera, Sat-radio, iPod, DVD & Music Video's, & maybe slight better sound from the Bose w/new head unit outweigh any of the listed cons as well.
When they do this install they will also be doing Passport 9500ci w/ 3 jammers, 2 in front & 1 in rear w, display & speaker in cabin along w/ red LED lighting under dash for foot-well area. (friend has blue in his M6 and looks great at night, I don't think it looks ricey IMO, just a little extra touch!
So +1 on do it!

Pics of my aftermarket gps/sat/ipod/bt/stereo
Here are some shots of my new Pioneer system. The iPhone quality isn't great, but the Porsche crest splash screen looks terrific and very OEM.
