997.2 heated wheel conversion

Hi!
First post but have visted site many times previously. Bought a 2011 C4S 6sp last fall. It has heated seats but no heated wheel, and no MF. I searched and found that several members had done swaps on their cars to add MF and heated wheel (Minok and DRSpeed had good posts which were helpful ) and decided to take the plunge. Ryan at Suncoast was helpful in detailing the needed parts (heated MF wheel, clock spring, controller), though sadly my dealer insisted the parts come from their shop! In any event the parts finally arrived and I got a call today from the dealer saying the MF is activated and working fine but they are getting a fault code on activating the heated wheel. In effect, the dealer seems to be saying the controller is looking for a heated wheel and can't find it (?) which is a puzzlement because I always thought the heated wheel would be "on" without any other special activation once the right pieces were installed. They say they have done a PIWIS flash already. If any of you who have had this done or are familiar with the process can help with suggested next steps I'd be very appreciative. Also, if you can tell me the dealership where you had it done it would help because I could have my dealer contact them directly.

Don't you just love newbies who immediately start out asking for solutions to their problems?

very weird. on my 2005 997 with a 2012 heated wheel, you need to connect the extra plug to the center part of the steering column. I didn't expect it to work at all but it did without having to go to the dealer o buying any controllers or anything but the steering wheel and airbag.

I went from non-multifunction to multi-function, so they controller may have just been needed for the MF stuff and not heated wheel features, but I cannot be sure. Thats likely also why the new clock-spring was needed, because of the conductors.

First check would be: did they installer plug in the heated wheel properly.

I ordered my parts from Suncoast and the folks at Barrier Porsche, in Bellevue, Washington did the work. They had no issues what-so-ever from what I recall.

I may be going the other direction. I'm installing a paddle wheel and removing the heated MF wheel.

you have to get the additional heated wheel wires and put them in the column before the heat will have any connections to the car, suncoast sells them when they sell a heated wheel

Minok, thanks for the info. Will pass along info to tech here in Cleveland. Wish all were issue free here. I seem to have the right parts, MF works fine in every aspect. The heated feature simply won't engage atall. See below for a little more detail.

OKB, many thanks for the input. For clarity, My tech is getting a fault reading from the NTC sensor. This is explained to me as being the Negative Temp Co-efficient sensor in that without the wheel sensing it is in place, active, or otherwise connected the heated feature won't activate. Aparently the reason for this is that without the sensor functioning there is concern the wheel will overheat and become too hot!
You mentioned additional wires to connect. First time I have heard of that and I have talked with the Suncoast folks who have not mentioned it earlier. There are various plugs in the MF wheel assembly itself which I beleive are plugged in my case. Are you saying there is something seperate and additional I neeed to have? Thanks

If a car did not come with a heated wheel, it doesnt have the wiring in the column to connect the wheel wires. The heating wire is a seperate part and unless they installed it when they did the wheel. It aint there.
If you buy a heated wheel from suncoast they will ask if you want the wiring kit also. You need to call and talk to ryan and give him the whole story.
First the mechanic has to take the wheel off and see that the plug is not plugged into anything. The plug on the heated wheel should plug into a socket on the column that has the 2 wire connectors in it. The mechanic put the plug into the socket. But there isnt any wire connectors going to the 12v source. Its just a blank socket.
Dont pay any attention to what the computer says yet. theres nothing to read.
heres a pic of a heated wheel connector and into the opening in the wheel. the socket on the column will have the socket sticking thru the opening.

Thanks OKB. Do you have a pic of the column side? I want to find out if the plug is a harness that plugs into the clockspring or is it part of the clockspring.

JoeBaseball, I'm considering doing a similar swap with my 09 997S PDK. Would you share a "Ballpark" figure for the cost of such a conversion (parts and labor)?
