2007 997.1 Oil Pump issues?
2007 997.1 Oil Pump issues?
I have a 2007 Carerra S with a cracked case, under warranty, to be replaced by Porsche. Are there ongoing oil pump issues that I should address with a reeplacement Porsche modified pump or aftermarket while the engine is out of the car?
Have them check the contents of the oil pump carefully and open and do the same with the oil filter. You're looking for any debris in the oil which would suggest a bearing or related failure upstream. Also make sure the oil pump itself has not contaminated the oil and spread particles throughout the motor. The safe not sorry thing

The OP is getting a replacement engine from the factory under warranty. So my guess is he won't see anything inside the engine. I get the impression that it is not an oil pump issue rather the OP is looking for any updates to the oil pump or known oil pump issues.
It would be great to see a photo of the cracked block.

Not sure how the question is even relevant. If Porsche is replacing the engine under warranty they'll put in the oil pump they spec for that engine. Not aware of any programs they have to let you modify the engine before it's installed.

I read that the oil pump was broken. Thanks for the headsup. Btw: what Dadio said.

The dealer says the case was cracked when it was cast. Porsche has not replied yet....New development though, they say that they're probably going the short block route, which uses existing parts rather that a remanufactured engine. Not happy about this.....
I guess I should have the entire engine checked when it is torn down? Oil pump, bearings etc. Any suggestions? I live 4 hours from the dealer, probably should hire a local mechanic to go on site to look at the torn down engine.

Alan is right...the oil pump is not broken. I am just trying to do the right thing while my engine is apart; looking for pump issues that might occur in the future. Now that the engine is apart, perhaps I should look for more stuff....
A "short block" usually means that the core of the engine (case, pistons, crankshaft, oil pump, heads, etc) will be supplied by Porsche as a unit, and already assembled, and all the ancillary equipment (intake system, exhaust, fuel injection components, ac compressor, alternator, etc.) will be transferred from your engine to the new block, so I don't think there will be a chance to look at all the innards of the new engine before it is installed in the car. As far as your problem is concerned (the cracked case) a short block is as good as a new engine. The concern that I would have is the quality of the work done by the mechanics at the dealership in installing all the other stuff, and any potential problems that might appear in the future as a result. Note, however, that you should get some warranty from the dealer that will cover the entire installation for some period of time.
Thanks so much for that explanation of a short block. If that is accurate, and I'm sure it is..... this give me much relief from anxiety while I wait for an answer from the company.
I had coolant in the cylinder and am concerned that the valves and overhead assemblies were stressed upon compression. I had thought that a short block did not include these items.
Thanks again,
Bob
