Satellite Antenna Location...Specific Placement

So I just had Sat Nav-TV installed in my 997.2 It works great but my Sat reception is really spotty. I had them install it under the passenger windshield wiper cover as most people have said...but it's really terrible reception.

- Can someone who get good reception take a picture and mark specifically where you up it? I'm thinking it's just not in the right place or mounted the wrong way.

- Where is it in relation to the wiper mechanism?

Thanks so much for your help.

When I had an aftermarket radio installed in my 996, they ran the wire across the battery and it ended inside my right front fender. They had a problem with reception until they shielded the wire crossing the the battery.

Interesting....I'll have to have them check it. I called the installer today and he said it's installed on a great spot under the wiper cowl and that it should be great. Not metal above it. I'm going to take it back tomorrow and have him look at it.

Can someone tell me under the cowl where they have theirs that works the best? By the wiper mechanism? By the passenger air filter?

I would interested in this also. I installed mine under the cowl and the reception goes out when on tree lined streets etc. works almost flawless on the highway though. I wasn't sure if this was normal or if I need to adjust my antenna placement.

Ken.

How did they shield it? Can you post a pick?

Sorry, the car is gone. They had some wire shield similar to what I have seen at Radio Shack. It is like a small silver hose with a slit down it to push the wires into.

When I had my boxster, I mounted the small XM radio antenna inside the car -- on top of the mesh (I didn't have leather; and I don't have a picture) cover over the speed dials. Had pretty good reception -- ran the wire towards the driver's A pillar and underneath the dash. I imagine, you could install it anywhere inside the car under the windshield, provided you don't mind looking at the antenna on the inside of the car.

Sorry no pix but...

I mounted my antenna on left side under plastic cowl. There is an ~ 1" metal body lip/fold under top edge of black cowl just about where lower edge of windshield meets body which is perfect. Still get occasional drop out in very heavily wooded areas or in deep mountain valleys but otherwise very good reception. The key is to make sure it's above top edge of hood and have antenna attached to ferrous body metal (supposed to also help with reception). Make sure you zip tie the lead wire securely so as to not interfere/get destroyed by the wiper arm/motor/etc.

Good luck
