Turn on head unit without starting car

Is there a way to turn on the radio without having to actually turn the engine? Sometimes I'm just sitting in the car while it's parked and want to turn on the radio.

In my 997.1 all I have to do is insert the key - no turn or anything and it powers up the PCM...I should have said that inserting the key provides power to the PCM - I still have to push the button to get the radio to work...but I never have to turn the key.

I tried it just now, but it doesn't work. I put the key in tried to start the radio; nothing. Sorry but I should have said earlier, I have an aftermarket navigation head unit installed: the pioneer avic-x940bt.

In my car ('06 C2S Cab) you have to turn the key to the "on" position (not the "start" position) and then you can turn on the PCM without running the engine. You will get a notice on the PCM screen though, to the effect that "operation of the PCM without the engine running possible only for a short time" or something like that, and the PCM will shut off by itself after a minute or two. I believe Porsche did this to save battery power.

That would mean the PCM stays on when you shut the car down and take out the key - mine always shuts off when I exit and remove the key.

I do that too. I put it in the "on" position, or position #1 in the owner's manual and I can use all electronics including the radio. But then I get the Check Engine Light on.

of-course mine shuts off when i take the key out.. but i thought i remembered being able to turn on the PCM within couple of minutes without the key in the hole. the PCM then shuts off automatically after couple of minutes.

i am prob mistaken.. but i will try it when i go home tonight.

You're absolutely correct - just tried it - no key needed - I just went out and pushed the button and radio came on- key was in the house.

I don't know what sound system you have but with my PCM I hold down the power button until the unit powers on.
