997 GTS or 991 S
997 GTS or 991 S
I am thinking about getting another 911 ( had a 2009 4S) has anyone driven the 997 GTS and how does it compare to the new 991? I want something sporty with a food exhaust note.
My quick take:
- GTS feels like a sports car 100% of the time, never feels like a GT/Cruiser
- 991 feels like a GT/cruiser unless you get on it, in which it feels like a sports car
And the GTS w/ PSE sounds GREAT, especially if you put on a center bypass pipe.
Here's my more extensive view on the 991:

As a guy who is also out of Porsche at the moment, I would offer that the 2011 GTS's are a great value. Power kit, other options and I've seen a fair number for sale that look like cars people just had while they were waiting to take delivery of their 991's. I suppose if you have the bucks, get the 991S. I'll argue the GTS is dated, but a much better value.
Had to mad the same decision a few months back. The GTS just felt more like a true sports car; a lot more raw and fun to drive. The 991S felt just as fast but a lot larger and more like a daily driver. Not as exciting to drive. I'll probably wait for the 991 GT3 or Turbo
I just went through the same thing!
My brother just got a 991S Convertible w/7 speed manual and it was so easy to drive yet when you pushed it, it responded like a true sports car.
I ended up with the C4 GTS because I liked the look and got a great deal on it with less than 500 miles!
It's being picked up at the dealer in Chicago tomorrow and should be in Austin next week

...but it depends on what you want out of your drive.
I went to my local dealer to check out the 991S and wound up buying a 2012 GTS off the showroom floor. No doubt, the 991 is a fantastic car, but I was actually disappointed by it. I can't easily describe why I felt that way. Perhaps it has lost the edginess that I love. I can't say it's over-engineered, but in a way, it is. And this may sound silly, but the absence of a handbrake lever and hydraulic steering really bothered me.
I was about to leave, when the salesman pointed out the GTS: Guards Red, 6 speed with black full leather interior and deviating red stitching, and all of the goodies (LSD, Sport Exhaust, Sport Chrono Plus, PCM with full navigation, etc). To top it off, the dealer added around $7000 worth of free extras (Euro leather sun visors without airbag warning stickers, short shifter, carbon fiber air vents, CF door finishers, clear side markers, and several other items).
Then, he reduced the sticker by another $2000!
So, the buy was a good value, but I would have bought it anyway, because it "spoke to me" and I love the way it drives. I also am in love with the wide body. Viewed from the rear, it's simply a heart stopper.
