Oil Filter Inspection

Hi Folks,

I performed the third oil change @ 11k on my 2007 997S. I took this opportunity to install the LN Engineering spin on oil filter kit and magnetic drain plug.

Upon inspecting the used oil filter, I found a single little piece of debris (looks to be metallic) nested inside one of the pleats. The last time I changed the oil, I also had a single piece of debris in the oil filter.

Cause for concern? What could this be?

Here are some pics:

Is it magnetic?

Well, I took a screwdriver and magnetized and it was able to pick it up.

1. It could have been in your engine ( harmlessly, hopefully) for while and just got picked up by the filter this time.
2. It could be a recent piece that came off of something.
3. It could have been introduced by your new filter kit.
4. Or?
You mentioned the material is magnetic. What are the filter kit components made from? I would doubt it is IMS bearing material as the miles are low and you have the latest bearing design. Were the drain plug and flter kit free of burrs when you intalled it?

Doesn't appear to be life threatening for your engine and the fact that the filter caught it and there was only the one partical is a positive sign. Might want to look into a magnetic drain plug like the one Rennline sells. It will trap any additional metalic particals that may be in your oil and assist in determining the the extent of the problem.

In the closeup the backside of the particle looks like a metal turning. It could be a metal turning from the new filter's threaded mount. Now that you have switched to a metal canister filter you need to invest in a cutter for filters if you intend to continue your filter inspection at the oil changes. As stated above a magnetic drain plug may help.

yup, got the magnetic drain plug installed this time around.

In another year or 5k miles, we shall see what happens.

Are you doing oil analysis? Might be worth starting!

I would think that filter housing is non magnetic alloy. I would be concerned but not sure of how to proceed to rule out ims, water pump impeller bearing etc.

A lot of filter housings are stamped from low carbon steel. The base plate with the female threads is made from a carbon steel as well.
