oil cooler or third radiator
oil cooler or third radiator
its been an mystery to me that most in 6speed family have gone to the avenue of putting a 3rd radiator to control oil temperatures. i agree that controlling the water temperatures will affect oil temperatures. but, if the problem we would like to solve is oil temperature why not install an upgraded oil cooler?? is there no upgrade for this item. don see it at the suncoast website. are we going the 3rd rad ave since it is the only one available to control more the oil temps?
sorry if i am not too educated on the 997 way of cooling oil. i am assuming that there is a separate oil to air intercooler to cool the oil somewhere. it the oil cooler is a water to oil intercooler connected in parallel to the cars cooling system then the 3rd rad is the only way to help.
I only assumed it was due to the motor placement and the difficulty of getting an aux. oil cooler into a good airflow. I would be hesitant to to run oil lines all the way up to the nose of the car, or to have something hanging below it. The 3rd radiator on the other hand is quite affordable and easily fitted.
Yes that is true but that is for a 997.1 its funny the price for a 997.2 is almost four times as much! That is why i was wondering if someone has tried installing the .1 version on the .2 if the main radiator is the same and only the plastic pieces were different then maybe it could work! Only thing omportant really are the radiator core and mointing hardware and of course the connection hoses. If thats the same.....

I think most that have gone the third radiator route have done so due to track time. I put one in my 09 CS2 M6 after seeing oil temps in the 260 range on a relatively cool day at Mid-Ohio. The oil temp dropped to 230 on a day in the mid 90s, again Mid-Ohio, after installing the third radiator.
My 11 GTS PDK has the third radiator as stock. I may be at Mid-Ohio in October. If so I'll have another data point.
On another note I installed a set of Rennline grille screens. I still can't believe Porsche hasn't provide some sort of protection for the radiators. Imagine getting a hole in one on a weekend in the middle of nowhere.

I wouldn't be surprised seeing temp go up on a track day.
with grille screen, at best, you lost about 35% of surface. often more.

There are some very good resources online describing air flow loss on various mesh configurations. Expanded metal, expanded metal rolled, 3 mesh 0.030" vs. 0.040, 4 mesh 0.030" vs. 0.040" etc.
im sure its going to produce only positive results that is why the '11 versions of the 911 have this as standard. i guess porsche run outof thing to do before the 991 that they decided to put the third rad.
