"You're an A*&hole. Look at the car your drive."
You know, as funny as that is - it is not true.
Nor was his bit on cruise control - "Yeah, because it's really f'ckin hard to do this!" (holds his foot at an angle, mimicking somebody with their foot on the throttle)
People CANNOT hold a single speed. Too much evidence to the contrary. If we are on the same stretch of road, we should only meet once (traffic lights withstanding). If you are traveling faster than me, I should yield (stay in left lane), and you should pass, and continue on your way. If I catch you cruising the same speed, repeatedly, then you slow me down, because of your failure to yield, you messed up. I have no problem with people that want to drive faster than me (I don't speed excessively), but I understand that others prefer to. My role is to be courteous to all drivers. I don't own those streets.
So as much as I believe that Carlin was one of the great comedians in his time, some things he said did not make sense. The only people who are idiots, to me, are the people who do not pay attention to what they are doing, or where they are doing it (cruising 35mph in a 55mph, not passing anybody in the left lane, taking 45 minutes to reach 45mph - as if trying to preserve the planet at each stop).
I also dislike the - "Because I'm not in a hurry, you are not either" mentality of people who take a full minute to achieve 40mph in a 45mph zone. But they aren't in a hurry, so neither are you. You should slow down and enjoy the life blessed upon you.
As a sports car owner - I enjoy the drive. Why can't I do this parallel to the others who do not? Simple: idiots. Lack of courtesy towards others. Selfishness. Self-centered drivers. People who believe they are superior beings, who feel the need to 'teach' you a lesson in driving. People without manners (bad parenting?).

We see engaged drivers in all types of vehicles. I''m seeing more and more engaged Prius drivers these days as I assume sons receive them as hand me downs from their parents. I also regularly see engaged mini vans drivers. They would probably drive a different car if circumstances allowed.
The worst thing on the road, which is thankfully not common here, is when you see someone driving a performance car and they are no where near engaged or aware of their driving. They have the car as a fashion accessory!
Like much of his humor, I don't think he meant it to be taken literally. The point I believe he was making was that one's interpretation/misinterpretation of events will depend on his/her perspective - driving being one of the more humorous examples of such as so demonstrated by commentary within this thread.
A lot of his humor is a take on perspective, BS, and of course - truth.
But there is not one person on the surface of the planet that can hold a constant speed, without the aid of a computer (even they have difficulty).
Maybe that's why it bothered me... Maybe because the wife (then girlfriend) and I had a hard time with multiple instances of this on our way to his show when he actually used that line back in the '90s.
He said it, and we both looked at each other - as if to say,"Well, yes, George... Yes, apparently it is f'ckin hard to hold your foot still."
Yeah, I know... Still bothered me.

My friend, George is/was my favorite comedian of all time. I enjoyed the other 99.9% of his performances. Had wonderful engaging conversations with him in person. Very nice guy, and was as funny in real life as well.
LOL! I loved his albums back in the mid 70's as a kid. The seven words, you can't say on TV. As I aged and became more crotchety, he became more liberal to me, but I still laughed at his humor.
LOL! That's right! I became more conservative (crotchety too!)! Pretty funny in that context!
What's the saying, if your not a liberal when your young, you have no heart and if your not a conservative once you've aged, you have no brain?

Who knew we'd share an interest in driving ethics/etiquette, politics, AND comedy?
It is a button, exclusively on GT-R's, that turns the driver controls over to a little guy in Japan who will drive the car remotely, allowing you to 'cruise' along.
This explains not only the lap times, but the notion that GT-R's drive themselves. It is apparently true to a point.

Its that wonderfull feature that provdes the only way I can avoid a ticket on the insanely low 35mph speed limit stretch of long 2-lane I need to use on my commute when it could easily be driven at 50.
