Man I am so disappointing that my fan and temp buttons look terrible .....black worn. I just cannot believe any manufacturer would use defective junk.
How can I fix it?

You're right. No manufacturer (especially Porsche) would use defective junk. The buttons, like tires, brakes, seats and other parts wear out based on their use. If you, or the previous owner, used yours up, you simply replace them.
Come on the car has 20k miles......I have owned a lot of cars and this only happens on the cheap cars...normal wear....now that's
just silly. If they were a wear item then they would have made them easy to change and they woulf stock them.....they do not. You have to buy the whole cluster.....thanks for the good laugh tho.

I third that opinion. I love my 997, but man these buttons are so troubling. My daily driver, a G37, which has twice the amount of driven miles has buttons in better shape...and it cost 1/3 of the 997.

Ok 1/3 the way there.......a donor panel for button harvest:

Nice replacement process for a normal wear part.

And yet, its not covered by the CPO warranty. Amazing.
I'm not sure the buttons can be replaced. I was told by Porsche that I have to replace the entire PCM over a single screwed up button. Has anyone swapped out one of these buttons? Here are a couple photos of the button I have to replace:

They can't that's why I bought a used climate control panel. Will harvest the buttons and send them to get refurbed. Man I hope my PCM buttons don't fall off too.

This is a tell tale of the material used on your buttons...
ECO: means you have rubbery buttons that may be delicate to hands oils and lotions
AC OFF: latest version, solid hard plastic buttons, more resistant to everyday use.
My car has 85,000 miles and in florida, so those buttons get used a lot... I have the AC OFF panel and the buttons look like new.

Sure wish Porsche would offer the new stuff to replace the junk. By the time I am done replacing these two will cost 200.00 smackers

I removed my buttons, removed the old peeling plastic with some paint remover, and then repainted them with PlastDip black spray. The spray has the same 'rubber' consistency as the other buttons and you would think they were stock. I did lose the original fan and temp icons... worth it, rather than buying an entire new unit.
Well I need them to look stock. It's worth it to have them refinished. I hope they hold up better than the cheap factory work. Thought the Germans were more quality conscious.
