997.1 Targa 4S... strange noises!

Hey guys.
I'm 3 weeks into my first ownership of a Porsche. Love it.

Got some issues though and wonder if there's any pointers round here. My car is a 997.1 Targa 4S Tip. It's only travelled 12,500kms in 6 years so I'm guessing that a few "gremlins" are coming out from basically being mothballed most of its life.

1. On corregated/ rougher roads I'm getting a ominous clunking in the front left. Could be bushes....could be worse. Never an issue on smooth roads, no vibrations so unlikely to be driveline I think. Anyone have issues with steering racks previously as the noise also seems to happen on parking "locks".

2. Again on corregations another noise coming from the rear. Sounds like a loose or broken exhaust hanger, but given the age of the car I'm thinking the sliencers have shat themselves. On cold start I get a "tin can expanding" noise that seems consistent with a silencer expanding and contracting.

Other than these, the car had a factory minor service pre-purchase, but seems to be running really rough at idle. Gearbox seems a tad slow respond too.

I'm wondering if it just needs a reflash to begin "learning" my driving.

What's the experience of how quickly 997 go "off tune" after servicing?

Any comments would be gratefully accepted.

Can't diagnose a car over the internet. Would suggest the car be put up on a lift and inspected by a competent mechanic. As for the startup sound, it is normal for these cars to rmake a deep rattle sound at cold startup. If it doesn't occur when the car is already warmed up, the sound is normal.

Rotes,

Talking about pictures, could we get a larger picture of your signature pic? That is a lovely collection of flags and deserves a larger display.

Thanks
Yves

My 2006 C4S does the same when cold. It is common and not unpleasant as a matter of fact: very throaty and raspy. Once the exhaust system gets in temperature, all the parts expand and the car becomes more silent. Good side of it: You can impress a "someone" when starting your engine cold.

There is a thread in the 997 forum that a user had a loose cooling hose in the front wheel well on the passenger side. That could be the issue in the front. Read this thread. Also do a title search in 997 for rattle before you take it in. I hope this helps.
