A 997.2 weak link

The 997.2 seemed to me as a great reliable ultimate design 911 of the generation. It was the culmination of the 996 chassis and the birth of the next successful engine design to take porsche into the future eg. Easy maintenace design. However, it seems that it really still has weak links. Waterpump problems, i stil don think it reasonable that this part be a maintenance part as some suggest it to be. And now, control arm issues. My 2010 is having its front control arms replaced due to knocking sound. It has 20k kms only. According to the dealer im not the first one. I cant imagine a car this new having this done so early. My 23yr old mercedes with almost 300k kms on it is still running original front suspension control arms. It seems an upgrade to gt3 adjustable control arms might be in the future for my 997.2

Well 20k km here and control arms in porsche speak were gone. These are not the wishbones. Both were replaced by the dealer on warranty. The impact is tremendous. It seemed the car track straighter steering wheel better feel and a generally better ride. Never thought those things did so much.

Dealer mentioned they have done the replacement on anjmber of cars already and they knew it immediately when i mentioned a knocking sound coming from front suspension.

Oh yes. Of course not as many there. When porsche established itself here around 1998 i think, the number of porsches on the road has steadily grown. But lets say there are 200 997.2 for example here, and 12 has had the trailing arms replaced, i would consider that a significant number. And all our cars come from germany, at least the ones service at the dealership.

Are you in Manila? Cebu? Except for the 'freeways', how are the roads around town?

Could it be why the pcars in PI are having the problems?

Roads in Manila and the Philppines in general are horrendous. As i noticed in the numerous taxis i rode in there, i'm sure control arm bushings are a common problem with all cars there.

There are some roads that are not that good, but generally the roads where you see the porsches are on well paved roads. Roads in the metropolis can be compared to most other metropolises. Well what i can say is i have a 1988 merc and she is still running well. Ball joints, tie rods, draglinks have been replaced but the control arms are still original. As for the multi link rear suspension, only one link has been replaced, on both sides. Reason why i would think our trailing arms are a bit weak. And the Pcar is so new and with few mileage.

If that is really a weak link, I am pretty sure there would be a recall.

With all due respect, I believe comparing a Merc to your sports car is like comparing apples and oranges.

Btw, I was planning on retiring in the Phil and taking 2 of my Pcars and 2 sportsbike --- until I found out about taxation. Grrrr. The govt should reconsider the taxation and follow Australia's

That is a very good plan, retiring in the phil. You will live longer. But i do agree taxation is a bit steep but still nothing compared to singapore.
A brother mentioned comparing mb and porsche are totally diff. I am comparing links of cars. And qualitynof these cars. I actually think the p carshould be more durable as its suspension was developed to handle track work.
Nevertheless, i think it could be due more to humidity, temperature and other factors than the road. I could personally say my car generally experienced good roads, not perfect but good, which i can compare to driving in san francisco, and having it fail in 20k kms is something. And to think my pcar might have the highest mileage 2010 here. That means the other failed a lot sooner, in terms of mileage that is.
