New Member - HID Issues on 997 Install

Hey!

I just picked up my first Porsche last week. Prior to the Porsche I owned an NSX for 9 years, needed more power!

My car is non-HID. I went to a shop in Alhambra and had them install a PNP HID Kit. Later that evening it flickered and would not work properly. Went back to the shop the following day, they changed out the ballast, and shortly after, it was no longer functioning properly. Is it the kit or are special measures needed to install aftermarket HIDs on a 997? Does the kit need a direct power feed from the battery? Should I check the fuses and put a bigger fuse? At this time, it is still flickering and turns off. Is there a recommended HID kit and installer in the so cal area? The DRLs look wack with the stock halogens. Installing OEM HIDs is out of the question, way too much $$$$ (I already know the halogen projector and reflectors were not designed for HID, yada yada yada).

I have a 2006 997 with the VF supercharger package, 997.2 GT3 front end, 997.1 GT3 rear spoiler and 19" Advan wheels.

Pending Upgrades: VisseO Bluetooth Adapter (my understanding it also wirelessly streams music from Iphone), GT3 Tek rear bumper, carbon wrap on roof and rear blade, Fabspeed Exhaust, LED Tail Lights.

Look forward to being a part of this community.

My car came with aftermarket HID's and while I haven't explored the wiring it has wires going to the battery itself.

Also, it occasionally fails to turn on one of the lights when I start it occasionally but turns on after a minute of driving (so I turn on my high beams until then)

Sold the NSX recently. Thanks for the response. I'm taking the car back to the shop and having the existing HID kit removed that was installed last Friday. There is a shop called HID Masters in Orange County, they indicated they have done tons of 997s and will provide a lifetime warranty. If that doesn't work, I will give up on HIDs and go with cool blue Philips halogens. I need them to work 99%, don't want to get pulled over on my way back from happy hour and blow a .09.

Blue lights and DWI...nice combo...you won't be able to see anything.

Just keeping it real. Blue lights are better than flickering HIDs that may or may not turn on. Hoping to resolve this by weeks end.

Do you have your DRL's on? Hid ballasts do not like that. Ive seen new ballast burn out after a few hours due to the in consistent voltage. If it is on just turn them off in the light settings.

Congrats on the new car. I too recently (2003-2007) had an NSX - a 2001 red/tan that was wonderful. After 4 years the wife wanted something new.....typical Then she got tired of that and decided on the 997.2 4S. I hope she is happy for a few years....

OH - please don't do the blue lights it is way to much like a kid with a Civic.

Did you look into getting a real hid retro fit done? You can put hid projectors in your old headlights.

I would like to keep the DRLs on..hmmm....that kinda sucks. Anyone out there have a successful HID installation without breaking the bank? Also, what color temperature would best match the HIDs? HID Masters in OC, indicated they have done several HID kits on the 997s, but I did not mention I have DRLs. I my faulty HID system removed and am going to check that out this weekend, if it doesn't work, I'll just stay with halogens (PIAA Extreme) But I won't be a happy camper.

What is the ball park figure to do the HIDs properly? (scarred to ask)

Yeah, NSX was a blast, in hindsight I should have kept it, just did not have room for a 3rd car. NSXPRIME was an invaluable resource, saved me thousands!

OEM HID's are 4300 - Philips (and others) make a 6000 but it's a little "blue" - anything higher than 6000 looks like a tricked out Honda.

I swapped out my OEM HIDs and went with the Philips 6K units. When I installed them I found one of the 6K was slightly off color, and it flickered, quite badly. I reinstalled my OEM as it was very annoying and I also thought it would be a matter of time before it faulted. I called the vendor (RotTEC) and they sent replacements for both and they work just fine. Perhaps try another set of bulbs to see if that's the issue.

As others have reported, lot of "fake" Philips out there even being sold by reputable vendors. If you pay less than $250 you're probably getting counterfeit or seconds. Lots of "tells" to determine if genuine.
