Annoying Rattle
Annoying Rattle
I have a rattle that appears to be coming from the the right side of the car, possible passenger area. Started about 1 week ago but it is intermittent and about to drive me nuts. Having a hard time nailing it down, when it rattles it fairly loud. The odd thing is the intermittent part. Any ideas where to start looking? Common rattle areas? How could this be intermittent?

Is the rattle car a coupe or a cab? Cabs are prone to develop rattles from body flex. My cab has a few, and I can attest that they really are annoying. If you find where it came from, please post it back here.
Is it a rattle, squeak or creak.
First thing I did was remove everything from glove box, center console and door pockets.
I have read the sunroof can rattle although mine doesn't.
The pillar seat belt adjusters can make noise. Try moving it up as far as it will go then connect the seat belt to help keep it under some pressure, then drive the car.
Seats/mounts can make noise if no one is in them from engine vibration.
The seat belt surround at the top of the side panel can creak.
The door can thump over potholes if it is out of adjustment or weatherstrip has shrunken allowing it to move. I wrapped a piece of electrical tape around the door striker and the thump stopped. I guess the door needs to be moved in more or weather strip replaced.
The earlier instrument cluster can and probably will creak. There are posts on how to fix this but if you do, cover the plastics with protective tape before you remove anything. The Porsche 'soft look' plastic coating scratches *very* easily, don't ask how I know.
The back seat latch stop bolt can make noise due to the side panel rubbing against the bottom of the stop assembly. I covered the bottom of mine with 3M Squeak Reduction tape I bought online from Amazon. The 6 mm bolt holding the stop in place rounds out very easily, be careful. The bolt is $19 from Suncoast.
If you use a pry tool anywhere put tape down on the working area first.
I used the Squeak reduction tape in any place where I saw friction possiblities, I had the side panel off as well. Follow the manual instructions carefully.
Good luck, hope you find the noise.

Never had that one, at least not yet! Just for grins when you hear the buzzing hold the passenger seat-back steady to make sure the noise isn't coming from there. Noises can be very tricky.
If it is the console and it is plastic against plastic you could place a piece of felt between. Craft and fabric stores sell thin felt in plain or sticky back types. Or try the 3M Scotch Noise reduction tape to reduce the friction. The tape is translucent to cut down on its visibility.
Another source for sticky back felt and 'moleskin' thin material is RestorationSpecialties.com in Windber PA.

I had a nagging creaking sound near my A-pillar a couple of years ago. I had to agree to spend up to $400 for the diagnosis, with the promise that IF they found the cause, and it was determined to be a fault, it would be fixed free under CPO. I took the risk and it paid off, as they found the cause and fixed it (at a considerable cost to them).
