RPM Bouncing

Hi, I am the owner of a 2009 Targa4S, and am looking for help with a problem my car has developed a while ago. When the car is started cold and is stationary the RPM's bounce within a 500 RPM range, however as the engine warms up this decreases to about 100RPM range or to not at all. I already had a fuel injection cleaning and cant think of what else it can be. The problem is that I run out of warranty in 2 months and would like to get this fixed before then.

Any help would be appreciated, Thank You

Cars been in for service 5 times now for this same problem, each time they say they cannot diagnose it, till the last time when they cleaned the fuel injectors, however the problem is still there.

My car's rpm fluctuate for a minute or two when it hasn't been turned on for a while; then it normalizes.

Don't know where you are in NY but it you are anywhere near LI bring it to Rudtners in Freeport. Bill will fix it guarantee or know what it is, so you can at least go back and fight with the dealer.

I appreciate the tip and I am in LI but I was looking to have the whole thing fixed under warranty. Im sure Rudtuners will charge some fee for diagnosing the problem.

Intake stock??
Have you noticed a difference in your gas consumption? Does the car smell gas? If it does, it's maybe a problem with an intake sensor...(Mass air flow)

The car is completely stock, including the Intake. Gas milage has been relatively stable but the car does smell when starting it up lately.

This is probably not helpful at all, but offering it anyway.

I have a 2007 Audi S4 with the V8 motor. For over a year I would have rpm fluctuations like you describe on cold starts. It would last for about 30 sec or less and then settle on the normal idle rpm.

After many visits to the dealer describing the problem, I finally had a misfire develop. Once the misfire appeared, so did the check engine light. Ultimately, the engine had to be replaced due to scoring of the number 7 cylinder.

I'm not saying you have a scored cylinder, but the best bet would to get it checked out by the dealer or a trusted independent.

Tach bouncing at low RPM can have only a couple of causes. As your car has already been in 5 times for this problem, I assume they have already checked the easy things. As I understand it, that really leaves only the possibility that the tach itself is bad, in which case it must be replaced. That is not a small job. Demand they do that now, before it runs out of warranty.

I dont think its just the tach as the engine gets louder and quieter was the RPMs go up and down on the tach.
