+1. At that speed a pebble in the road could cause a wipeout.

My dad took a picture of the speedo while I was driving his 993 at 180 mph on the autobahn. This was years ago too, before digital photo and such.

I can tell you a 911 is Soo much more stable than other cars at high speed. It makes a difference, especially having big brakes to go with it.

X....

I have definitely never been 180 on a slight downhill on Muscogee Turnpike in Oklahoma at around 2:30 am on a weeknight. I also didn't have a serpentine belt break due to an idler pulley an hour later 12 miles from Wichita, KS.

How much distance do you need to get up to that speed? How long does it take to get up to that speed?

Obviously you have never done it......try it you'll like it!!!

it's ironic how this thread was created right after paul walker and his friend died doing "45 mph" in that carrera gt. it makes me question triple digit decisions i've made in the past.

I had to look up Paul Walker to see who that was.

The issue isn't the speed, its whats around you at speed.

You can safely drive 150+, and be in extreme danger at 30mph.

sure, speed is only a part of the big picture. The problem with speed is that the danger is compounded when another negative factor is added to the situation. Think about a mechanical issue being different at 30MPH as opposed to 150MPH. So my point is just that everything is magnified at triple number speeds.
It has made me re thinking some of my actions.

I think Derek has a good point. And here's another one. If you do run into the police, you'll have your license pulled which is a big problem for those of us who need a car for work. And the police will give you free negative publicity in the local media. Just as bad, you've left a trail of corroborating evidence on this site when talking about these obviously exciting speed events. Ambulance chasing lawyers love that kind of information. So... do what your heart and brain tell you but being low key about it may be best.

Slowing down in general.
Keep the high speeds for track days!

It depends on where you drive. There is some well known footage of a car in Germany loosing it at high speed with a massive wreck. Because the autobahn has such good guardrail systems in place, the car stayed on the road for most of the way, and the driver was able to get out of the car.

Here in the US, where we have huge distances to cover and not the traffic volume on all those roads, the roads are of lower quality and the guard rails and other containment / safety stuff is kept to a minimum needed. There a high speed issue will much more likely send you off an overpass, into a support post, tree, river, etc. So yes.. the consequences can be much more dire in the US at high speed.

Counter that with, does your chance of an incident increase at high speed? Are you more likely to have a blowout? Not likely if you are not already prone to one due to where you drive or how you treat your tires. More likely to hit a dear or racoon - absolutely. More likely to have damage from road debris or pot hole - you bet.
