997.1 Sports Plus mode retrofit
997.1 Sports Plus mode retrofit
Hi all - anybody know if this is still possible to do - I don't need the clock - just the software upgrade and the button.
I have the sports exhaust already but want the other 2 buttons!
- Tried a car with sport mode and loved the difference.
So -
1. can I get this done in a Porsche dealer
2. Any idea how much ( I actually live in Germany)
3. Can an independent do it? (i recall something about an auth code?)
Thanks in advance

Is this what you are looking for? They sell the software/button for sport mode...

For a 997.2...
For a 997.2 the answer is easy: See the Tequipment site at http://content3.eu.porsche.com/prod/...rm&country=usa, select your model, select Performance, then select "Sport mode subsequent installation".
There, you will see the PDK version is $1267 and the manual version is $903. Note that the cost of the changes to the switch strip is an additional cost not listed on that site.
It looks like the previous poster has a good find at Suncoast, it appears that they include the switch in their pricing.

This upgrade can be done at any Porsche dealer, usually programming and installation of the switch are around 2 labor hours. This requires dealer installation and programming, it can't be done at an independent shop. If you need help, let me know. Thanks!

Your local dealer can do it, they may not have experience with this installation, but it does come with an installation guide. They have to download some codes from the Porsche network, if they're unfamiliar we can walk them through the process.
As far as the installed product, it changes the pedal and engine response. If it's a Tiptronic or PDK, it will change the shift patterns. That's a huge benefit for these models. It will also change the PASM, PSM, and braking system. PDK models get launch control, and Sports Plus mode for incredibly aggressive/track oriented driving. Turbo models it allows for engine over-boost. The over-all result is a more responsive car, it seems to sharpen the car's reflexes.

I had it on my 2006 C4 manual. The only noticeable difference is that it makes the car seem quicker by making the throttle a lot more responsive when you first press down on the pedal, so it makes the car "feel" quicker. It seems be at the cost of the remaining throttle response as you push the pedal further though, so I never felt there was any net gain if I was doing accelerating heavily anyway.
I ended up turning on "sport" every time I got in the car so that my subconscious would be used to the responsiveness. A couple of times when I forgot to turn it on, I stalled the car because the throttle didn't respond as quickly as I was used to. For a while I tried leaving it off most of the time, but then when I did enable it I would end up revving up too much before the clutch engaged and over-slipping the clutch. Consistency in throttle response is important for consistent launches.
I wish they had an option to just leave it on... some aftermarket tunes allow for that.
Just for the record, in my 2009 PDK the changes in shifting behavior is very significant. It clearly brings the most benefit there.

I have it on my manual Cayman, it does make the gas pedal more responsive, and it almost makes the clutch pedal seem more grippy (not exactly sure how to explain that). If you have PASM or Sport Exhaust, it will still override those settings as well.

The Suncoast responder reminded me that my response just before that was incomplete. The throttle response change is the only thing you'll notice during day-to-day driving and as SunCoast points out the PASM & Sport-Exhaust mode does automatically turn on along with the Sport button.
The thing I forgot to mention was that during spirited driving in the twisties you'll discover that the traction control and stability management systems allow for a bit more wheelspin and tail-out driving before stepping in and modulating the throttle and/or brakes. Its not as drastic a change as I experienced in my C6 Corvette's equivalent, the Porsche one steps in a little faster, but it is better for aggressive driving than in non-sport mode.

I added the Sport Plus mode retrofit and the PSE to my 997.2 C4S. It is a great addition. I also did it at the same time I was doing the PSE so there was essentially no additional labor cost.
Just using the launch control once is worth the price of admission!
